Wow at the tolerance for drink driving. I'd only have one and that rarely.

If you have 7 and knock someone over during your next DUI, what should your limit be the following time?

Amount of time at the bar matters a lot for this. If I go and pound back 8 beers in an hour I'll be pretty drunk. If I'm at the bar for 3 hours and do the same I'll probably be under the legal limit.

basically impossible for me to answer especially without a specific time frame, any more than 6 beers in 2 hours and i'm probably not confident if i get pulled over. just a guess and i have no clue how accurate it is. the only time i used a breathalyzer i expected myself to be well over .08 and ended up blowing a .06 so maybe i'm underestimating how much i could drink and be legal

i'm 6'5" 250lbs

Reading comprehension ftl in this thread. OPs edit says <1 hour time span. For me the limit is 2. Not really worth the risk IMO

alcohol obv effects ppl different ways, some are fine to drive on 10 beers and some can't drive on 3 beers.

there should be a drunk driving test where they see how many beers u can safely drive with in ur system ldo. I know for me I drive a lot slower/more safe when i'm drunk which prob 100% offsets the loss of reaction time I have. It's the tards who can't handle their liquor/drive fast as hell when drunk which ruin it for the rest of us responsible drunk drivers

also driving in the snow is more dangerous than driving drunk in my case and i'm sure many others

it says less than 1 hour after consumption, doesn't mention the actual time frame of the drinking...

Don't forget that you're fat and that absorbs a lot of the alcohol. But why have a six pack when you can have a keg, right?

Let me guess, you are bicycles_biatch? I remember that story, it sucked.

Honestly, at least here in neo-prohibitionist Arizona, it's safe to assume that having anything to drink makes one a DUI risk. As it happens I haven't had a drink in months thus DUI isn't presently a concern, so that's one less potential complication.

I have never been one for staying out late and over time learned to familiarize myself with good and bad times to drive. E.g. the highest percentage of drunk drivers is ~10-11PM, not bar time or later. If I've been drinking and it's around those times I either don't drive or do it very cautiously or only for short distances. Finishing up a happy hour and hitting the road around 7-8 isn't as much of a risk.

So if the subject is "preventing DUI", don't drive late at night after ANY drinks (at least here), always seek out a back entrance/exit to bars as opposed to pulling out onto busy streets where cops may be staking the joint out, or...just don't chance it at all. Even though El D posted that link I've seen such a wide disparity in answers and live results with actual tests that I don't know what the right answer is.

I just wait until I can get 100,000 on Galaga. If I can score that high, I'm clearly not too drunk to drive.

smokers how do you factor weed into the equation? pretty much any time i am drinking i am smoking too. last week i played 3 games of beer pong(1-2) in a 2 hour time span plus about 1.5 grams of weed between 4 guys. i waited about an hour to drive afterwards just to be on the safe side but wouldnt have felt comfortable if i got pulled over. it obviously has no effect on BAC but certainly has an effect on how you operate.

This is quite true. It's amazing how extreme some people have been conditioned to be on this issue. You'll have crappy drivers driving through terrible conditions on 2 hours of sleep and texting who are legit appalled that someone would drive home from their local bar under the influence. I'll take the later car every time tyvm.

Personally I never drive if I've smoked because it makes me paranoid and too unsure of where I am in the road, etc. However I've met a few people that are probably better drivers high. I'd say that for most people overall it is less of a detriment than alcohol.

Smoking weed, I am told by experts, has an instant 1.5x-2x multiplier effect on the booze.

I'm a pretty big fan of driving while high, but don't drive after more than a drink or two. If I had to make an equation I'd use weed as a multiplier rather than scoring it in the same category as drinks. DUI potential = D*(W+1) imo. I also tighten my range if I have weed in my car.

in general, i would much prefer to be on the road with drunk drivers over the oblivious self centered housewifes on cell phones that are usually almost kill me.

There's been a lot of debate around this in New Zealand recently, following a few media investigations. The current limit is 400mcg per litre of breath, or 80mg per 100ml of blood (which I assume are about equivalent to each other, but I don't really know).

Basically a newspaper ran an experiment in which an 'average sized' male photographer managed 11.7 standard drinks before hitting the breath limit, while the smaller female reporter managed 5 - although they didn't mention the time.

An evening current affairs tv show did a similar test, but with driving tests on a simulator. The participants were:
Tori, Female, 18yo, 63kg, managed 6 beers before hitting the breath limit
Ketty, F, 49, 58kg, 6 beers
Graeme, M, 62, 82kg, 8 beers
Tristran, M, 40, 90kg, 9 beers
Kevin, M, 28, 116kg, 12 beers
A beer in this case is a 330ml Heineken, which is 5%, so I think around 1.1 - 1.2 standard drinks.

The first 4 beers were consumed in around 45mins, but they don't mention times after that. Also worth nothing that it only took 2 beers (~30mins) to get to about 150mcg/L for all of them except Kevin (who was still at 50mcg/L), so I guess there's a non-linear relationship.

Every single one of them noted that they reached a point where they wouldn't drive while still being below the limit, and the three of them shown on the driving simulator crashed it while still under the limit.

The general rule of thumb that people hear here is that the limit is equivalent to an 'average sized male' drinking 4 beers in the first hour and 1 per hour after that. I always thought that was ridiculous, but it seems like it might not bet that far off.

I've got two DUIs so my standards for myself are pretty stringent now. I never take my car anywhere that I'm actually planning on drinking for a while and not just having a couple drinks with a meal or something, and probably 4 drinks total is the absolute most I'll drive with.

When it comes to other people driving drunk though, I really don't have a problem with it at all. With my friends, I feel safe in the car with them having had between 8 and 15 drinks depending on how heavy of drinkers they are and how much alcohol affects them. Obviously, this isn't in a super-short time frame or anything, but I'm probably assuming ~3 drinks an hour. Basically, I feel like if you're not at least on the verge of being blacked out, the risk of anything bad happening in a short distance is still pretty small, likely no more than 5-10x as likely as you are to get in a wreck sober, and definitely less likely than you would if you were say texting and driving. As you get to the blackout stage though, the risk increases really really sharply in a hurry.

As mentioned earlier ITT, it's really not as simple as "OMG your putting peoples' lives at risk." There is unsafe driving, and there is driving after drinking. The two do not always overlap.

As far as taxis, it's calling the taxi, waiting for it, taking it, paying for it, and then figuring out the next day how to get to your car. (Or doing the whole thing twice, taking a taxi to leave as well.) It's really not always the most practical thing.

Rationally, I'd have to drink 6 drinks or so within an hour or two to stop me from driving. In reality, I would be driving regardless of how many drinks I've had.

The legal limit in Japan is .02. Penalties are way higher than in the States, too. If I have a single drink, I ain't driving.
