You're calling someone's cell phone with a reasonable, if not certain, expectation that they know who you are. If you left a message, you'd just ask them to call you back. This is either a familiar and casual business relationship or non-business.

Do you

Leave a message?

or

Not leave a message, expect them to see that you called, and then to call you back?

It's probably a generational thing. I'm inclined to think that if someone didn't leave a message, it wasn't important and they don't need a call back. Maybe they will find whatever answer somewhere else. It seems a lot of younger people *expect* a call back if you just see their number had popped up.

Hanging up and texting "call me" is basically the same as leaving a message, so vote there imo. I'm just wondering how many people expect a call back even if they just called and hung up when it went to vm.

I don't leave voicemails and don't like receiving them.

To answer your question, If I call and don't leave a message, I expect a call back (36 yrs old). With that said, I rarely call anyone and If I do, I usually expect them to answer (calling gf when she is at the store or is running late to meet me)

If I get a missed call without a voicemail I will usually call back if I barely missed it or text and ask what's up if it wasn't recent. I don't get many calls either though

I hate getting voicemails. If I need a callback, I'll hang up and send a text or email depending on the context (emails are usually for work). If I don't send a text or email, I still have a slight expectation of a callback.

ugh. getting voicemails is the worst. I let them pile up for days and then get very anxious for some reason when have to listen to them. the worst part about voicemails is every other aspect of communication these days is snappy. voicemails I have to connect to it and then wait while the robot lady explains every detail of the message and then I can't understand what the people are saying.

then again, I'm kind of an ass when it comes to cell phones, leaving it in the other room or just turning it off in general. my position in life doesn't require me to be too relied upon so I don't feel that bad. I hate being connected to everyone at all times, and I don't think it's part of my social obligation.

Oh and I disagree with this:

It depends on the person, but in general I'll follow up via text/email if I want a call back, just so there's no ambiguity. I wouldn't be upset with someone for not calling back if I didn't specifically ask them to. In fact, the auto-callback can be really annoying if they call back 2 days later and I no longer need to talk to them.

As far as someone calling me without leaving a message, I'll call them back if it's a friend or someone I want to talk to, otherwise they can gtfo. And you better be damn sure I have your number in my phone if you're going to assume a callback, because unrecognized numbers get ignored every time and it's probably why I didn't pick up in the first place.

This does suck. I have a "Visual Voicemail" on my phone and it grabs all my voicemails. It usually gets them within a minute or so from vm being left. When I listen I don't have to call voicemail. Their number (and name if I have it) shows up in the app and I just hit play.

I'm probably in the lazy ass portion of humanity and if you're not a close friend/family and its not related to work I'm probably not calling you back at all. I'll never do a call back if I just see someone called with no message. Even if I see a message I might not check it for a few days.

If you want something from me its on you to get in touch with me. Try me again later or use a more convenient mode of communication like text/email.

Mostly no in scenarios like the OP. Depends on who I'm calling, and yeah it's pretty well correlated with age. The one exception is my father who returns all calls to his cell phone whether a message was left or not. He doesn't do this because he's adapting to contemporary norms. He does it because he can't figure out how to access his voicemail.

i don't leave VM unless it is business.

BTW extreme ragetilt at people who leave a VM like "hi my name is mumblemumble and my numbers is fifouthetwosixsevnineeighthree." Obv standard is "My name is First *tiny pause* Last and I need x. My phone number is *tiny pause* area code *tiny pause* first 3 *tiny pause* last 4. Repeat optional. JFC.

My VM message is "You have reached the cellphone of yeotaJMU. Please leave a message or I will consider your call unimportant"

basically, I'm not calling you back unless you leave a message.

Voicemails are terrible unless it's time-sensitive info that's too long or inefficient to text.

Usually if any of my friends need me for something important and I don't answer my phone, they will either send an sms or facebook message, so I almost never call back if somebody just called and didn't leave any kind of message.

Leaving a message of "call me" is annoying. If someone calls me, I know they want to talk to me so I'll call them back, but I realize it's nothing pressing, as they would have left a message with that information.

I hate voicemails, I let them pile up, and then the fact they are piled up makes me want to check them even less because there are so many of them. I tried to fill my voicemail once so that people would get the "this voicebox is full" and not be able to leave a message, but I got tired after 20 messages and quit.

Most people know to leave a text if they definitely want called back, and the ones that dont are older family member types and I just call them back if I see they called

Almost all my calls are business.

Almost all vm to people I know are about 3 seconds long. It's a question of saying "call me" or just not leaving a message. If I don't leave a message, I don't expect a return call. To younger people, I will often hang up and text something.

I purposely called myself left 50 VM until mailbox was full. I hate VM and I am never leaving one or listening to one.

iPhone stores the vm locally, so it's not that big of a deal, but still...

Yes, getting a text is better than getting a vm. But, what do you do when you're calling someone else?

The crux of the matter is, do you expect a call back if you just call w/o leaving a message or texting? Maybe you're even peeved that you call someone and they don't call back, even though you didn't leave a message?

Ugh, my technically challenged friend doesn't like texting cause "why take 5 mins to type 3 sentences when I can just call you and have a conversation". Who the **** wants to talk on the phone for 30 mins.

I used to have a friend that would call me all the time after college and moving our separate ways (before text messages) and leave a 3 second message like the one you described on my voicemail.

It tilted me so bad. I could see that he called, didn't need the voice confirmation.

Oh man, Micro, ugh! I hate when I see who called and I'm about to call them back but I first have to access the pointless ass voicemail they left so I can erase it.

Lbr, I won't leave a message. I'll text you if I want you to call back. If I don't text, don't bother calling me. Either not important or I'll take care of it.

When I see that you called me, no vm or text, are you expecting a return call?
