What is this mint.com, and what will it do for me?

That's not the question you need to be asking. You need to ask:

What is Google.com and what can it do for you?

Since apparently you struggle with that concept too which seems more beneficial.

Custer,

If TomCollins said, "I don't think vaccines are good for children," would you say that he's entitled to his opinion and you can't say that he's wrong about it?

Yeah, google is an option, asking someone who mentioned a topic is an option. Several choices.

Big,

Yes, I though Custer's response was odd as well.

"Get mint.com, it rules!"
"Oh yeah, why do you like it?"
"Moron, google it!"

Also, I'm not sure why he thinks you need Google. Maybe he doesn't know about going to websites directly. You don't need to Google it, you can just type mint.com into your browser and it'll take you there where there's a pretty good description.

It's pretty simple - you can connect your bank account, credit cards, etc to it, and then it'll send you alerts when payments are due (not sure why Custer is logging in every day, though; maybe he didn't Google how to set up alerts), create reports on spending by category, etc.

So, you sign up for some 3rd party site and supply them with your bank account and CC information because you're lazy and irresponsible?

Sir,

Payment alerts are just one reason people use Mint. Better personal finance management is the broader reason.

Its encrypted. 0% chance mint has any of that info. They do have my ssn i imagine. They could feasibly do a key logger but that would have to be native to the website and would be found out immediately.

I have 6 cc's, 11 student loans, 1 car loan, 4 bank accounts and a couple investment things. I can see all my recent outgoing and ingoing money movement which makes fraud detection easy and I dont have to go to each individual site.

El D,

I dont check daily, I was just saying that if you get in that habit then no way you "accidentally" miss a bill.

Custer, Sir:

They've been owned by Intuit for a long time, so they may have changed this to their own infrastructure now. But when they were an independent company, they and most others in the space all license the financial linking stuff from http://www.yodlee.com/ anyway, so if you do anything online there's a good chance you're already using them.

What if the original version has a mistake? The original performer simply messed up and something is in there that was not supposed to be there. Then someone else came in and performed the song without the mistake, more closely approximating the original vision.

I guess I simply disagree with the premise that the original version of something is always "exactly how the song is supposed to be". (I see now looking back that El Diablo made the same point earlier in the thread.)

Setting the above aside for a moment, the entire conflict rests on the word "better". The word "better" must be defined strictly for purposes of this discussion in order for progress to be made.

Lolololololol good one.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about so I'll help you. Credit cards show financial responsibility credit debt doesn't.

Te student loan one is interesting. But I think you are right. Next time I'm born I'll try to be born into a river family. Obvious life leak.

Unless you don't understand how student loans work. I'll help you. All mine are federal. When you apply through fasfa you get approved for loan amounts you can accept, however the way the federal government does loans you may get offered 3 different loan types for different amounts. On your credit report, if you accept all 3 that's 3 sets of loans open. I went to undergrad +grad school. 11 isn't all that much but it's also the amount of loans is irrelevant it's the dollar figure that matters.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Sir,

Blame 27o, not Custer imo. I think once OOT mod 27 starts a thread specifically for Custer derails, that's tacitly giving permission for Custer to tard up whatever discussion he wants. Now it's on 27 to move the derails!

11 student loans isn't a lot. If you're getting loans a lot of them are split by year or semester. For my loans I have 2 payments but it's actually a combined 9 loan accounts.

The number of loans is irrelevant, total debt is better but all that really matters would be comparing debt to income difference.

i didnt realize responding to a semi-personal attack with a **** load of general misinformation was frowned upon.
