That is a potentially disappointing answer.

What is the story behind your reasoning?

Not much of a story...hadnt read past the first page yet but someone else echoed my general sentiment.

Dogs are so much better than humans.

A lot of animals are better than humans.

The dog crouching by his dead owner laying in the street ****ing sucks. There is always that image of JFK Jr. shown saluting his dad at the funeral which is sad, but he was too young to know what was going on. You get a sense that this dog knows something is wrong with his owner and is sad/scared.

This is actually a Tribe in Africa that some how figured out how to tame Hyenas and they walk around with them like pets.

Also A+ pics for the ones that aren't Photoshoped.

There hasn't been a lot of discussion, and no caption, for the picture in the OP of the execution by handgun. I don't know all the details, but my understanding is that that single picture, which ran in either Time or Life, is said to have been the catalyst for the US's withdrawal from Vietnam, as it helped galvanize popular antiwar sentiment among groups that had previously been pro-war or ambivalent.

Also note the picture of a young woman over the body of a man (post #43). That's from Kent State. It helped change American attitudes toward public dissent against foreign actions.

The Hubble Deep Field is said by some to be the most important photograph ever taken, but it hasn't changed an entire nation's, or the world's, history. Not yet, anyway.

According to the story linked earlier in the thread, these actual guys are more like a family-band of traveling minstrels. They use the hyenas to entertain and sell herbal remedies or something. But it does say the hyena handling has been passed down for generations.

And sadly, to one extent, it's a totally misleading picture. IIRC, the South Korean was executing a NC spy in civilian clothes, which is legal under international war code

Legal, and who knows, maybe even proper considering all the circumstances (though I would guess not, given human nature). So in a sense it having that powerful an effect is unaesthetic. But I think few people would look back and say that our withdrawal at that point in the war was a bad thing.

[note: it's still interesting that even in the pre-photoshop days, photos sometimes told lies — and in this case one of the most powerful lies ever told.]

It's this kind of thing that really takes away from the idea of photograpy's authenticity.

Strongly agree, which makes the whole 'shopping trend such a discouraging, and potentially damaging one.

Tough to tell people "see, I have a picture!" and expect them to believe it... especially if you're fighting oppression and such.

Colin Powell spoke about this photo during the '08 Presidential campaign when people were accusing Obama of being a Muslim, and Powell said, "Well, the answer is no, he's not a Muslim, he's a Christian and always has been, but the real question is, what if he was? Is there something wrong with a 7 year old Muslim kid thinking he could be President?"

And he goes on to speak about this photo. It's powerful stuff.

Wow I was just thinking how awesome it would be if those were super balls dropped from a plain.

This image is from 1841, when he was aged 86. There are a couple other images out there of people captured in photos who were born in even the 1740s. One is said to be Mozart's wife. Incredible.

This deserves more love. I've always found it fascinating to follow the last surviving soldiers from each of the great wars, the last surviving Civil War widows, etc. For instance the last surviving Civil War widow just passed away in 2003. It's very cool to have a direct link to someone or something from the distant past.
