Are the lightning strike and volcano eruption independent?

Meaning, lightning didn't go off because of the volcano, and the volcano didn't go off because of the lightning. There just happened to be lightning while the volcano was going off.

It'd be sweet if that wasn't the case.

I think they are related. I saw news footage of the icelandic volcano that erupted last week that showed a continual lightning storm in the ash cloud, they did explain what caused it but I can't remember

No. They aren't independent. Has something to do with the stuff being spewed from volcano having a greater positive charge. Google "dirty thunderstorm" for more info.

Cliffs note: Volcanoes (sp) are positively spewy. Should probably sit on their left to isolate.

It's because all the rock and ash and rubbing against each other causes different static charges to build up in different spots. Basically the exact same thing that causes lightning in thunderstorms but with water droplets replaced with ash.

Re: Pictures that say 1000 words (some pretty disturbing)

the Pacific plate is enormous. I was thinking today that would be nuts if the plate cracked in half, creating a massive earthquake and obviously creating a brand new fault line. Do plates ever do that? Or have they pretty much been the same for thousands of years? Off to wiki...

Didn't want to clutter up the thread with all of them. Go here to see the full set of color photos from Natzi Germany here http://www.cracktwo.com/2010/04/colo...-100-pics.html

Seen those pics before, they are fascinating. The Nazis certainly knew how to create powerful imagery and symbolism

lol. I was surprised to see the Pacific Plate is actually like the 3rd largest plate. The Eurasian plate and Antarctic plates are huge. Plates around the equator seem to be smaller.

And that wiki page on techtonic plates has way too much info. I looked around for a bit but then left. I still that that would wreak utter chaos if a plate busted in half. That would cause mega Earthquakes and tsunami.
