Re: Pictures that say 1000 words (some pretty disturbing)

Apologies if these have already been posted...

Pretty self-explanatory imo.

East German border guard Conrad Schumann leaps into the French Sector of West Berlin over barbed wire on August 15, 1961. On 15 August 1961 he found himself, aged 19, guarding the Berlin Wall, then in its third day of construction, at the corner of Ruppinerstraße and Bernauerstraße. At that stage of construction, the Berlin Wall was only a low barbed wire fence. As the people on the Western side shouted Komm rüber! (”come over”), Schumann jumped the barbed wire and was driven away at high speeds by a waiting West Berlin police car. Photographer Peter Leibing captured a photograph of his escape on film and it became a well-known image of the Cold War.

Picture from an Einsatzgruppen soldier’s personal album, labelled on the back as “Last Jew of Vinnitsa, it shows a member of Einsatzgruppe D is just about to shoot a Jewish man kneeling before a filled mass grave in Vinnitsa, Ukraine, in 1941. All 28,000 Jews from Vinnitsa and its surrounding areas were massacred at the time.

On the night of January 24, 1950, one of the most amazing photographs (right figure) of all time was taken in the Sam Houston Coliseum, Houston, Texas. As William Branham (an influential Bible minister sometimes credited with founding the Latter Rain Movement within American Pentecostal churches) stood at the podium, a halo of fire appeared above his head. This picture was the only one that turned out on the entire film! George J. Lacy, Investigator of Questioned Documents, and often hired by the FBI in that capacity, subjected the negative to every scientific test available. At a news conference, he stated, “To my knowledge, this is the first time in all the world’s history that a supernatural being has been photographed and scientifically vindicated.” The original of this photograph is kept in the archives of the Religious Department of the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.

Re: Pictures that say 1000 words (some pretty disturbing)

Jasper Nance has been doing some amazing high speed photography over the last year featuring objects that she shoots with a .22 or pellet gun while photographing them with a special high voltage flash. She’s also takes requests from people for stuff that they what to see her blow up.

An amateur astronomer named Thierry Legault took this crazy photo of the Space Shuttle Atlantis silhouetted by the sun.

The shuttle (which is only 37m long and has a 24m wingspan) was traveling 17,500 mph at 350 miles above the Earth's surface -- and Legault says he only had .8 seconds to get the shot. The sun looms in the background a mere 91 million miles away.

It's this kind of thing that really takes away from the idea of photograpy's authenticity.
Not sure if it's already been addressed, but this is real. It is Teahupoo in Tahiti and breaks so violently that it appears to break below sea level.

another really good one from that GIS link

wow- I couldn't figure how it would be possible to get up and around a wave that high, but I'm used to straight beaches.

Thanks... of course, it makes my mini-rant look a bit silly.

Then again, I could be Alobar...

Re: Pictures that say 1000 words (some pretty disturbing)

Please don't degrade this thread by posting obvious fakes/stupid ones please.

That said the "Marine Sergeant Ty Ziegel" blew me away. He's on the flip side really lucky to have such a fantastic wife. I'm not sure I'd be able to handle marrying someone like that. Ugh, terrible person.

I can't bear to watch the monk flaming video either.

And I was just looking up those animal cruelty pictures but I can't bring myself long enough to copy it over here.

These dogs in dog fighting.
The dolphins slaughters in Japan.
Skinning live-animals for their pelt because 'killing' them first takes too much time.
