An interesting side note: Actor Eddie Albert, probably most well known as Oliver Douglas from Green Acres, fought at the battle of Tarawa. According to Wikipedia:
Quote:
A genuine war hero, he was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for his actions during the invasion of Tarawa in November, 1943, when, as the pilot of a U.S. Coast Guard landing craft, he rescued 47 Marines who were stranded offshore (and supervised the rescue of 30 others), while under heavy enemy machine-gun fire.

What's interesting is the cities of Washington that are still in danger of being destroyed in the event of another eruption.

Hasn't the question become what is causing it? Is it caused by human activity or is there another explanation? I would like to know what caused the warming of the globe that resulted in the end of the ice age. Certainly can't blame that on man-made hydrocarbons can we?

That question has been asked and answered. See callipygian's excellent posts on the Science, Math, and Philosophy forum here and here for a much better explanation than I could hope to give.

So? We can't blame man for forest fires millions of years ago, but that doesn't mean that man isn't the main cause of them now.

There is an account in "Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions" by Richard Erdoes where they set a adolescent bear up against a humongous and angry bull several times it size. The bull snorted, wailed, and charged. The bear seemed not to notice and was certainly toast, then at the last second, sidestepped the giant bull's charge, and limply held out a claw to let the bull's own momentum tear itself open, spilling its guts on the ground.

Not really surprising that in hours of constant smoke footage a face might form at some point.
