Owe a friend some money, is this payment justified? Owe a friend some money, is this payment justified?

Ok, I owe my friend $150 from a poker related debt.

We both recently signed up at the same gym, except he signed up about 2 days before me.

The gym has a referral system that pays one month of gym fees ($150) per person you refer.

My friend asked me to refer him and I did, therefore giving him a free month and saving him $150.

So, do I still owe him anything for the debt?

lol, yes you still owe him anyway, since you should do this anyway for a friend?

$150 a month gym fees?

If you are paying that much for a gym membership, you shouldn't owe anyone such a small sum

No, it's just something you do for a friend. Some friends might offer to split the referral with you, meaning you'd owe him $75, but it's probably douchey to ask him for the split.

IMO, you should split the referral so you still owe him $75

It's like one month we have threads on being useless with chicks, then the next month threads on being useless with debts and clueless on friendship. I wonder what next month will bring.

ps: you owe your "friend" $150.

You owe him $150. I'd also re-examine where my life went this wrong if I was making a big deal about such a insignificant amount of money.

You owe him $150. But I don't think there is anything wrong if you two decided to split the $150 referral fee depending on all the facts.

It's cyclical. Next month will be bad roommate situations.

Edit to add: Yes you owe him $150. Why should the gym pay your debt? Also if you can afford $150/mo gym membership, why haven't you paid him back already?

Yes, the gym is expensive and very nice. It's the Equinox in NYC.

I normally pay my debts right away but I thought I would post this question before paying him the $150.

He obviously thinks I still owe him $150 and so do some other of our friends.

I do like the splitting idea and only owing $75. I am not worried about the money, I am just kind of pissed that he signed up before me and just figured he would get the referral without even discussing it with me.

I also don't understand how the debt wouldn't be settled because I saved him $150, the amount owed, that he would have had to spend out of his pocket if I had not referred him. In my mind I am paying him $300 now instead of $150...

If you had never incurred the poker debt and still referred your friend would you expect him to pay you $150?

Obviously no. But I would ask him for $75 so that we could split the referral. I think this is the best option.
