Re: OOT Life Tricks

Trick I learned in college: Before going out for a big night of drinking, eat a York peppermint patty. On the off chance you vomit, it will be minty sweet. One less thing to annoy you later. Also, those deep beer belches will be minty sweet.

oh ya, a really realyl good one for saving money....open up an LLC

there are so many upsides to having a EIN, you can shop at places like restaurant depot, get contractor prices @ home depot, and you get cheaper prices/no sales tax, Im not sure if it is legal but no one is going to go after you for it

If you go to a sporting event/concert in the winter, bring a small trash bag that you can stuff your coats in and stash underneath your seats so it doesn't get soaked in beer from the row behind you.

A lot of detailing shops shy away from doing headliners, but you can knock it out yourself in about 10 minutes. Get a can of aerosol glass cleaner and liberally spray the headliner in sections, and then smoothly wipe it up with a soft towel. It'll come out looking brand new and with no sagging.

Bonus tip: Dirty floormats? Just throw 'em in the washing machine.

For simple household cleaning products and toiletries, shop at a dollar store. You can save hundreds a year this way.

As far as using your gas cap to keep the pump on, a bic lighter also fits perfectly, although it tends to make others nervous.

No, but it's impossible to cut even in lots of circumstances, so the chooser ALWAYS gets the bigger amount. If you flip for it, the cutter presumably will still cut even (unless they like to gamble a lot), but the "EV" of how much you get is 50/100 instead of 51/100 or whatever. I assume the people doing this aren't going to divvy it up in portions of 1/100 and 99/100 and just flip for it. The idea is that you are trying to split it as close to 50/50 as possible, then you flip for it, so the chooser doesn't automatically get the bigger portion. You can also just as easily both divvy it up, ie. if you don't agree that the portions are equal, you can adjust it first before the flip. This process is most useful for divvying up drugs or something.

Or you could flip for who gets to cut.

Fun thread, my contribution (if not already said).

Gently tap ketchup on the "57" of a bottle of heinz, comes out easy.

A follow up, dont use any brand other than heinz.

just off the top of my head, some of the absolutely mandatory ones.

ad.block plus - gets rid of 99% of adds, significantly speeds up page loading times for many pages. It's great.

autopager - autoscrolls on forums, search engines, websites, news articles so you never have to click next page ever again.

KallOut - highlight anything and a list of options comes up youtube this phrase, wiki this, imdb this, google this, image search this, map this, digg this, etc, there are dozens of common tools.

There are a ton more as well.

FireGestures - Right-Click + <gesture combinations> allows you to perform a variety of repetitive web-browsing functions. It's the best thing since sliced bread.

eg: Right-Click + <drag down> = minimize browser
Right-Click + <drag down> = new tab
Right-Click + <left> = go back
Right-Click + <right> = go forward

It'll reinvent your browsing, guaranteed.

Every time you purchase anything all you say is " Is that the best you can do?" using the puppy dog look and you will get an extra 10-20% off a surprising amount of the time.
It works. Well. and is a non confrontational haggle. Many sellers will simply be giving you a contractors discount.
Who would you say that to in a Best Buy?

Does it work at McDonald's?

Most places have the squeeze bottles, individual packets, or pump. I haven't seen a glass bottle in ages.

Not only is this guy wrong and the original guy right, it's not something unique to HDMI cables. There are no significant differences in any sort of cable or cord for normal home usage, so always buy the cheapest kind.

It's extra super true for HDMI cables too. it's a digital signal, either it will work or it won't.

Yeah, and HDMI cables tend to be amongst the most hilariously overpriced.

Just in general, everything targeted at the audio/videophile home theater system market is a scam. The only things that matter are the actual moving parts(TV, speakers, etc.). Google about it, there are some pretty hilarious products being offered like noise-reducing volume knobs and magic speaker crystals and ****.

can anyone explain this? i've heard it before but can't imagine what is physically different that makes it true. i'm not saying its untrue, i just can't think of why it would be.

It shouldn't be true. Ketchup in general has pseudoplastic flow characteristics and will thin down with increasing sheer (vigorous shaking). Gentle tapping will not be enough to change the the rheology. It could work for a different reason though, such as loosening the ketchup from the wall of the bottle allowing it to flow better. If this is the case, there shouldn't be a 'sweet spot' on the bottle that works better than any other spot.

It's not classy but the wine still pours fine, and you have an excuse to drink the whole bottle.
Why can't you just put the wine bottle in your shoe and bang it against a wall until the cork falls out like normal people? Sheesh.

it basically frees up space for air to flow into the bottle so the ketchup comes out easy. it's no better than any other place on the neck--it's just easier to say to people. Hold @ angle & tap 57 is simple and works.
