For the Las Vegas fans of homemade root beer...

Ellis Island Casino (Behind Bally's) makes an awesome one (It's one of their micro brews). It's got a great bold root beer flavor.

Can't beat the $7 steak and micro (root) beer special.

coke + vanilla ice cream

also a Boston Cooler is Vernor's ginger ale (may be just a Michigan thing) and vanilla ice cream. It was invented in Detroit and named after a street called Boston Boulevard.

The Midwest does not move as fast as the coasts and thus is privy to some pretty good old school stuff.

IMO. They're all good though, you can't go wrong.
Seems right to me too, but I haven't had them all so recently. It seems like A&W is real creamy and maybe the best.

Yes you can buy it in the store, at least in chicago. The Berghoff restaurant has closed down but they still sell the root beer.

I'm drinking Virgil's right now, it's my new fave. I've only seen it at whole foods.

Huge fan of Virgil's. Their sugar-free version is unlike any other diet soda I've ever had, it's barely even sweet. But I like it.

Lot of "bitter" root beer haters ITT. Don't get why A&W gets so much love. Honestly, it's the worst between Barq's and Mug. And IBC can't even be considered in the same category as Mug, A&W, and Barq's. If you hate Barq's, there are quite a few root beers that you probably dislike.

Best root beer I've had. Pretty sure only to be found in the St. Louis region (just like my beloved Red Hot Riplets.)

Anybody ever been to Whole Foods? Their 365 Root Beer is good, made with cane sugar instead of corn syrup.

I must be the only Brit who likes root beer. Everyone else seems to gag thinking about it.

Got some Goose Island root beer (as it's easier to pick it up from specialist beer shops rather than anywhere else) which isn't bad. Don't know enough about it either way to say what's better or not.

Root as in shoot obv.

I have not tasted Hines or a homebrew so I can't comment on those, but out of the remaining, I prefer IBC and it's not even close.

missed this thread early, and was semi tilted by how long it took for someone to mention Virgil's. crushes everything else nationally distributed.

IBC of the original choices. Man, I miss their sasparilla.

Red Rock also makes a good root beer. I assume it was a cane sugar root beer, as their soda certainly was.

My favorite two are:

Thomas Kemper (from Seattle, sweetened with honey)

Abita (near New Orleans, they also make good regular beer)
