Dropping support is fine (although Android don't do dat). But when you push updates incessantly to incompatible devices....theeeeennn we got a problem.

Not allowing performance/hardware requirements from 4 year old devices dictate what you do in new software is absolutely a feature.

Thought this was an interesting quote from Jobs. Apple seems to be moving away from this philosophy.

"One of the things I've always found is: You've gotta start with the customer experience and work backwards to the technology. You can't start with the technology and try to figure out where you're going to try to sell it. And I've made this mistake probably more than anyone in this room. And I've got the scar tissue to prove it. And I've tried to come up with a strategy and a vision for Apple; it started with what incredible benefits can we give to the customer? Where can we take the customer? Not starting with Let's sit down with the engineers and figure out what awesome technology we have and how are we going to market that."

It's fascinating how you can't have an objective conversation about the direction of your beloved phone manufacturer. Isn't that the definition of fanboyism?

The engineers say "hey we can output audio via the lightning jack." The company implements that and then markets around the tech. Thats literally the mistake Steve Jobs is pointing out.

Explain how it's the other way around.

You don't sound any more objective than I do. Apple has consistently moved towards simpler designs in their hardware, fewer ports that do more, fewer wires for the user to deal with. Removing the audio port is totally in line with that philosophy and has nothing to do with technology for technologies sake.

Earlier you said you never charged your phone and used headphones at the same time. How has the amount of wires been reduced? You know what hasn't been reduced? The amount of adapters you need in order to use a decent pair of headphones. How's that for starting with the user experience?

Edit: Also, fewer ports doesn't equate to a better UX. It equates to a better Apple engineer experience. Their whole marketing this year has been that removing ports makes their lives easier. The end user obviously would be better off with the option to use 3.5mm/lightning/bluetooth. It obviously doesn't affect us one way or another if there's an extra port (IP67 and 3.5mm jacks are not mutually exclusive).

We've already been over this. I moved to BT headphones a long time ago to not have to deal with headphone wires while hiking. I need no adapters to listen to iPhone. The phone gets plugged in for charging, it's a much better experience than dealing with cables. That's what Apple's view of the future is and they are slowing moving customers there. If Apple moves to inductive charging I can see a future iPhone with no ports at all and just imagine the bitching from internet experts over that. Where are you seeing Apple commercials that mention the audio port or how much easier that made it for Apple? All I see are commercials about how much better the camera is. Apple obviously disagrees with about what makes the end user's life better, the are betting it will be better with an iPhone without an audio jack than any other phone with one.

An even more glaring hole in the whole "wireless is the future maaaaan" argument, is that unless you buy the sole model of $160 air pods from Apple you need a microUSB + charging brick to charge your headphones. So when you need a lightning charger for your phone + micro-USB for your headphones + lightning headphones when your headphones are charging.
