Although it's Tom ****ing Hanks, I feel like this movie has a potential to be a huge bust because the general movie going public hates sci-fi imo. Or it could be amazing. I'm hoping for the latter. I'll probably see because like I said, it's tom ****ing hanks and he is one of my favorite actors. The fact that it is from "the makers of the matrix" really scares me though. It kind of reminds me of that crappy movie the Time Machine with guy pierce. But hopefully will be ten times better than that.

edit: found out it's going to be rated R. Which does change whether this could be a hit (or not)

I liked number9dream even more.

I read the book, and enjoyed it. I seriously doubted that it could be translated to film at the time.

After seeing the trailers, it certainly looks as though it may work.

Nice. I don't remember ever hearing of the book, but this looks really interesting. The long Halle Berry shot at 1:32 was cool, imo.

There's a 5+ minute trailer #1 on youtube, and a whole bunch of director commentary things, but that all seems too much for me before seeing the movie.
The review quotes on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Atlas_(film)#Release) definitely add to the interest, though. Def looking forward to this one.

these fantasy movies about life and mystery pretty much always suck on a blockbuster scale. its nothing but cgi.

I can't name one. Minority Report is the last sci-fi movie I can think of that was a big hit. And that was what, like ten years ago? But then again, that's Spielberg, and people tend to flock to those.

Think this movie has the potential to be well-reviewed but it won't be a huge hit.

This was my favorite book of all time prior to Infinite Jest, and while I'm hopeful that the movie will do it justice, I can't imagine how they squeeze a story that epic into even a 3 hour movie. It would seem more at home as a mini-series, as bad as that sounds.

It also appears as though they're really playing up the love story aspect of it, which wasn't really present in the book.

I'm excited by the trailers, and definitely have Tom Hanks as one of my top 5 actors of all time, but I'm a bit doubtful at the moment.
