I know for sure this was the law in NY, and I had some guy get really pissy with me once about this.
I worked overnights in a convenience store (lolsummerjobaments) and this guy comes in with two giggling girls, I'd guess they were somewhere in their late teens. They go stand by the milk while he's at the beer section, but it was a small store and I can see him talking to them about what they want.
So when he walks up to the counter with a 12 pack of beer and two four packs of wine coolers I ask to see his ID and the ID of the two girls. He turned beet red and starting swearing and yelling that since he was buying I didn't need to see their ID, and they weren't together, and that's not the law anyway, yadda yadda. The two girls just looked sheepish and walked out while he was screaming at me, and when I refused to give him the alcohol he shoved the wine coolers across the counter and over the edge on my side, shattering a couple of them.
He stormed out while I just stood there with damp sneakers and started cursing myself at the mess I now I had to clean up. What a ****ty job that was.
