I’m buying a 2023 4Runner and I’m torn.

Both are AWD.

One has 5,000 miles and is near the top of the line trim with all the bells and whistles (TRD Off Road Premium).

One has 17,000 miles and is the base model.

Fewer base models and higher trim is $6,000 more than the base.

Is the higher trim and 12,000 fewer miles worth the $6,000 price difference? I’m specifically wondering if it’s worth it from a resell perspective in a few years. Does higher trim hold its value for future reselling?

Buy what you want and can afford, don't factor on resale value on this type of vehicle, its not a collectors item and is your daily driver i assume.

I can afford either one it’s just a question of if I want to pay for the higher priced one and if it makes financial sense. It’s my daily driver and I’m not in the snow or anything. But I want to have 4x4 capability should I need it and/or move somewhere with snow in the future. They’re both 4x4 so they both accomplish that goal.

So its what you would like as comfortable accessories, much like a house. But not in regards to resell, don't factor in resell.
Vehicles depreciating is expected, if it doesn't, that's just a bonus.

Edmunds.com. Punch both in and see what it says. Much more realistic than KBB, imo.

not really no. with economy cars, people want in at the lowest possible price on the secondary market. you will get more money, but not that same or even similar price spread of $6,000.

if your goal is to maximize ROI and cost basis, get the base model. if you goal is to enjoy the car while you own it, get whatever model your heart desires and don't complain when it comes time to resell... Atoyot's have supreme resale value no matter what the model or the trim level.

The esthetics of the higher trim off-road Atoyot's are really really nice, but they are mainly cosmetic in nature, even if there are a few 'performance' advantages to some of them.

trim doesnt matter that much unless engine or transmission are affected

youre better off saving the $6k and investing in bonds for 5 years.

also why AWD? higher maintenance costs, lower MPG and you can achieve similar results with snow tires on RWD

It depends on what the bells and whistles are. I have a top of the line lincoln which has heated seats and steering wheel which I love in the winter but more importantly it has a collision avoidance system which alerts you when you're getting too close to a car and will also stop automatically if necessary, as well as a feature which keeps it in the lane (forgot what it's called) so if I'm answering a text and drift across the line it will correct itself to keep me in the lane, so if I wanna change lanes without using my signal it thinks I'm drifting off and will auto-correct itself so I'm sometimes fighting with the steering wheel saying "my airplane" (pilots will understand) so if those bells and whistles are safety features, I think it's more than worth the 6K, but that's just me.

What I'd want to know is the story behind these vehicles. Both seem to have very low mileage for them to be sold used. If they were former rentals, they could've been put through the ringer and not properly maintained. Former leases would be somewhat less concerning, but still not ideal.

These things being said, I'm not opposed to buying low mileage used cars per se. But I think the money you stand to save might not justify the risk you might be taking, and the potential resale should be one of the last factors influencing your decision since in a perfect world you drive either one into the ground. But if you have a short term exit plan, then that would matter, although in that case, maybe lease instead?

JFC how about not answering a text while you're driving.

C'mon, man! He's only drifting into another lane repeatedly. It isn't like he's crossing the median and hitting some family head-on. What's a little crumpled metal and a lost arm or leg between fellow travelers?

I paid extra for that privilege but my texts go to my car's screen anyway, I was just giving an example. Sorry if I ruffled your feathers!

Ended up buying the base as they dropped the price for me making it a $9,000 lower price than the higher trim.

They have the same engine, suspension, and transmission. The only difference in trim is heated seats, a fake hood scoop, a sunroof, different seats, and a locking rear differential. I would only need that for serious off-roading which I don’t intend to do.

Thanks for the tips, everyone! Very pleased with my purchase and it came with an additional 100,000 mile bumper to bumper included in that purchase price. Says it covers all electronic components and everything.

All in, got it for $5,000 below blue book.

Yeah, and I live in Central California where we don’t even get snow. I test drove one with heated seats not realizing it had them and that they were on….i was worried for a minute when I felt the warmth.
