I keep adding movies I think I should watch to the queue, and then I don't watch them because there's something else that popped into my head that I feel like watching. There's what I think I should watch (the queue), and what I feel like watching right now, and right now usually wins out.
So the solution to procrastination (and plenty of other life problems too - any addiction would qualify) is simple: "Do whatever it is you believe you should be doing". But you already knew that. Actually doing what you believe you should be doing, right now, is the hard part.

Re: Need help with procrastination/lazyness
Don't waste your time with effen books, pills, or psychiatrists. You just need some balance in your life. I have an agreement that I made with myself when I was younger because I was a lazy piece of **** just like you are. To this day I still live by this agreement:
For every minute of the day that I spend doing things that I consider to be non-productive (unhealthy), I will spend a minimum of one minute doing things that I consider to be productive (healthy).

Re: Need help with procrastination/lazyness
exercising may be nice but i do not think it is the correct remedy for OP's current situation which i see is his grades.
i think what you should do is try to get into those study groups and or spend extra time in the library away from all the distractions of your tv / gaming consoles/computer

Re: Need help with procrastination/lazyness
He already said he's getting fat due to lack of exercise, so of course exercise is part of what he should be doing. Having an exercise routine will put him in a better place both physically and mentally. Exercise, avoid junk food / overeating, put limits on the amount of time you spend online, playing video games and watching TV. Those are really obvious steps to take. As far as OP's study habits, does he even have a clear idea of what he expects to get out of college and what he would like to be doing after he graduates? A lot of people don't and therefore end up just going through the motions. So that depends on OP's situation. The answer might be that he should focus more on his studies, but there's also the possibility that the degree he's currently pursuing half-heartedly is a waste of his time and he should be focusing on something else instead.

Re: Need help with procrastination/lazyness
Im curious what op would be the #1 thing holding him back from going out and just living life. I for years just lived a life filled with procrastination and always knew what the root of it was (anxiety issues) and eventually learned enough about it to fix it.
What exactly is going on in your head that makes u go nah Id rather sit on 2+2 or sit on the couch playing video games or whatever. Fear, not feeling good enough ect. You have to figure out wtf is going on in ur head.
Or you could go drug urself up too. It is the easier route.

Re: Need help with procrastination/lazyness
I do probably have low self esteem and anxiety so it's not easy for me to go make friends and be around people. It's so easy to stay in the comfort zone of video games and watching tv. Scared of rejection and care what people think too much. Stepping into the unknown sounds scary. So that could be a reason why I procrastinate. That doesn't really answer why I don't study or why I don't exercise though.
Btw, thanks everyone who has posted good advice. I will honestly try my best to implement it. I hate people who come on here to ask advice and then ignore it and don't change.
Update - ROOM IS CLEAN!! starting exercising now!!!

Re: Need help with procrastination/lazyness
The thing Ive noticed is that the socializing and such is what is the motiviator in life to go and make urself a better person imo. When Im not socializing I dont give a damn about a lot of common things (job, appearance, girls, ect.) but once I get back into it again it all just comes almost natually if you keep the momentum. Work on whats keeping u from living life, socializing and such and you will get more balance in ur life too.
The best thing to do is to just start somewhere tho, anywhere and it looks like ur on ur way. Good luck !!
edit: edited it a bit might ramble on lol

Re: Need help with procrastination/lazyness
A lot of you have it very wrong by encouraging big, drastic changes. Most of my adult life, I followed this constant cycle. I'd get like the OP describes for a while, decide OK ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Make some huge, major changes, and burn out in a week or 2. You can't maintain that amount of change and energy for very long when you've been basically atrophying for x amount of years. Change is slow.
Likely he has many compulsive behaviors (I'm OCD) so breaking those alone can't be done in 1 quick easy step. One thing that's really helped me get things done (you are talking to a guy who will procrastinate something simple like a load of laundry for weeks/months on end) is to do them incrementally. Things don't need to be done ALL AT ONCE, which is probably your natural inclination. You have problems, you recognize them, you want them to go away. Now. This just won't happen overnight and you need to realize this.
Also, doing a little at a time helps because it really will feel overwhelming otherwise. Do 10 minutes there, when you get tired of it, stop. Then find another 10 minutes somewhere else along the line. Take breaks. By all means, play WoW, surf facebook, do whatever, as long as your intentions aren't to escape whatever chore you're avoiding. After a long enough time of doing this, you'll look around at your room, your body, your studies, whatever it is, and go "Wow, that actually looks better than before." You may not notice a difference right away, but when you start seeing improvement, it will motivate you to do more. Which will in turn cause you to see more positive change, etc. until it's a snowball effect. This is how it has worked for me. I hit speedbumps of laziness all the time, the important thing is not to wallow. Get back on the horse.
My car has been a disaster for 2 years. We're talking piled to the ceiling full of ****. It didn't run well and it needed basically new everything. I decided, hey, if I take whatever I can easily carry out of the car each time I come home, eventually the car will be cleaned. It looks 1000% better and I actually feel comfortable giving people rides now. This motivated me to get it fixed up. Cost a ton of money, but now I have something I can have pride in, even if it's still a piece of ****. This is one example of how I've overcome laziness/procrastination/hoarding. I have others.
Sorry if this sounds preachy or hallmark-y but I know how hopeless it can seem. Good luck.

This does describe me pretty accurately. I never cleaned up my room because it looked like a such a big mess that I don't think it could be done. But had i just cleaned it up a little bit at a time, it would eventually get done.
Same goes with assignments. Teacher gives us a month to write a paper or I won't read chapters and tell myself I'll do it later. I just try and get it done in one swoop which usually doesn't end well.
I miss a leg work out day, so I tell myself I'll make it up tomorrow and do chest + legs. Well just working out my chest that day already took a lot out of me and I don't feel like doing the legs. Which is mentally discouraging, so it makes me want to just give up on trying.
I'm gonna try and change and do a little bit every time and not just let things build up.
you right about accomplishing things motivating you. I already feel much better mentally just because I cleaned up my room and started working out again. Even if it sounds like something so small.

If you're putting off doing something, do nothing instead of doing it. I mean just sit in a chair and stare at the wall. Pretty soon you'll go and do it.

They may not give you stimulants, but procrastination, disorganization, lack of interest, and some of the other things you mentioned are tied strongly to neurotransmitter imbalances. It could possibly be ADD, depression, bipolar disorder, etc. Of course you should get regular exercise too and try to schedule some social activities.
