how could it not?

Depends on your age, their age and how well you know them.

If you're 22 and they are 22 then anything is good enough

If they are in their late 30s they prob want something nicer

It does depend if you're a couple and on how well you know the person. I'd say generally speaking, $100 if you're single, $150 if you're a couple, and maybe an extra $50 if it's someone you're close to.

Rule of thumb is at least a little more than your 2 seats at the wedding would cost in your best estimation.

Minimum a hundo.

It really kills me that you're supposed to give an engagement gift, a shower gift, and a wedding gift. Three gifts for getting married, gtfo.

More for a couple, more for close friend. Actual dollars scale up as I've gotten older.

My wife is Chinese, so there were lots of red envelopes. Straight cash, homie. Not like the scene in Goodfellas, but there was enough cash such that we ended up going straight to the bank to deposit it on Monday morning.

It's just pushing money back and forth, though, because we'll give it all back (and dim sum) when the younger cousins start getting hitched.

A+

The most annoying part is that my best friend, who is getting married next year, lives with his girl in a studio in NYC. So their registry is full of stuff like standing mixers and pasta makers that I know will be in a box in their parents garage for years. Like the wedding is their one chance to accumulate quality stuff, so they're doing it years in advance?

I don't mind spending the money on them, but I'd rather just give them cash or $250 gift card to Trader Joes or something they actually need as two recent grads w/ tight finances.

one of my best friends was the 1st amongst us to get married. i gave them $500. the ****ing
wacko he married left him after less than a year. kind of felt like i deserved a partial refund lol.

the few weddings after that i stayed around 100ish. outside of that, my wife made awesome cakes--think ace of cakes type stuff-- and she ended up making them for like 4-5 of our friends as our wedding gift. which worked out great for me!

good thread

My gf is making me go to a wedding for her friend whom I've never met. Initially her invite did not have a +1 but she recently called and said I could come. The girl getting married is really rich and both me and my girl are tight on money at the moment

how much should I/we spend?

Couple of of my GF's co-workers each got $100 at their 2 weddings.

Another good friends of mine got $100, but I was pretty strapped 2 years ago when he got married.

My godson's mother is getting married in a few months, but she decided, on a whim that getting married 1 week before my GF and I was a good idea. I'm stretched thin as it is paying for my own wedding, so she's getting $100 or a stupid kitchen appliance on her registry.

Gave a good friend $200 for his wedding a couple months ago. I would have liked to give them more, but the wedding was in Upstate NY (I live in CA) so the cost of attending the wedding was pretty steep. They also opened their cards with us the following morning. The majority of them were in the $100-150 range if that helps you. I would say out of 40 cards, 30 of them were 100-150, 5 or so were $50-75, and couple were $200-250.

Usually go by cost per person plus a litte which varies by region. I'm in New England and $100 per person is average. When you're in a wedding, give less than the best man, more than a normal guest and realize that shower/bach. parties/travel/engagement parties etc. all factor in to the overall gift.

Standard seems to be $75-$100/single & $150-$200/couple. I'm a fan of not giving a gift at the wedding, and doing the 6 month later thing. Apparently you have up to a year to send a gift. Weird.

The reason I do this is b/c when I got married, even after the wedding we were pretty strapped. So 2 or 3 months after the wedding, we got a few gifts in the mail, and it was awesome.

An extra couple of hundred is so much better when it's not lumped into a multi-thousand dollar total. The difference between $10,000 and $10,500 is nothing, but getting $500 3 months after that $10k is spent is pretty sweet.

Damn, Standard??? $500 is alot. Very generous imo. Especially for a non-baller. If my best-man gives me anything close to that, i'll be floored.

i'm thinking this is a good idea, as i'm broke now, and will hopefully be in a better position to give them more in a few months.

Best man gets kind of jammed in that they should give more than the groomsman, who should give more than a regular guest. Also depends on the age/financial picture of those at the wedding.

Never been a best man but that seems kind of retarted. Especially when the groom is giving gifts to his wedding party, but whatev.

The last couple of weddings I've given framed photos that the couple liked which were a little over 100.
