My life as a car salesman.... My life as a car salesman....

So I saw an ad in the paper saying if you wanted to make between 40,000 and 110,000 a year to become a car salesman at this dealership near me. I inquired and ended up getting hired (no experience needed.) I have been doing fairly well, but the job is extremely stressful and the hours are ridiculous. Everyone in the place has the worse attitude I have ever seen (managers especially.) I have worked many jobs before and nothing compares to these people. As far as making money, you obv have to sell cars to make money...which is not guaranteed...and some weeks u could be broke. Other weeks I will make a 2300 paycheck. I can almost relate it to playing poker....the grind at least. Anyway, the reason I am writing this is because I am getting the urge to leave after I save up a roll for poker....only because I feel these two "jobs" are very similar. I do feel poker has more cons than car sales...being your own boss, you set the hours and you don't have to deal with a bitchy manager/s. opinions on this would be great. Thanks.

What kind of cars? General area?

And you certainly mean poker has more 'pros' than 'cons' but that's a nit pick. OTOH, what's w/ comparing car sales w/ poker?

Yeah, people hate us... Also, you can waste hours on end, get them on a car they want to buy...see the $ signs, just to find out they have bad credit and they can't get a car.

Would you agree that in order for one to be a good car salesman they have to be an expert and lying and trusting the truth? I tried it for a while many years ago, and I could not stomach the level of deception needed to be really successful. I don't compare it to bluffing in poker at all.

That being said I know several very successful car salesmen (making 200k a year plus), and they are the biggest bs'ers out there, so being misleading to customers is not really a problem for them, and I guess they do see it as just a game. It is a fine line to be good at it, because you have to walk the line between what your bosses want and what the customers want (which are often in direct opposition), and do so in such a way that you make those customers want to tell their friends and families about you and come back themselves.

I sell used Cadillacs, in the NJ area.... You can def lose money because you need gas to get to work and need to eat during the week...and if you sell nothing you get no money...

A USED car salesman! You know I've always wanted to try that as a goof.

And I don't think 'lose money' means what you think it means.

My ex father in law owned a used car lot for 30 years. You either enjoy that **** or you hate it. I used to poke around there a good bit and it would get on my last nerve when people would sit there yacking half a day over 50 bucks or something. I'd be like **** I'll give you the last 50 dollars if you will get the hell out of here

I used to sell cars. What kind of lot primarily (obv not a bad credit lot lol)? Do you sell new and used cadillacs? just caddys or all gm cars?

how many cars are u guys selling each month for the whole dealership?

Do you guys do the closing or do you have closers?

I sold cars in CA in 08/09 and it sucked hard....obv economy was sh*t and gas prices were hideous.

I loled when u said u found out they had bad credit and couldn't buy. most lots I worked at the majority of customers had bad credit. You wouldn't believe some of the credit reports Ive seen....and some of the kinky deals ive seen put together! No wonder ppl dislike and distrust car dealerships.

your posts brought back some memories TTtony good and bad
