Hi, Well, he did a lot of research and found out that the UK is way behind many other places in terms of treatment. This was a surprise to me.
Treatment is free in the UK, at least on paper. It doesn't mean you'll get the best, or most appropriate though. Many people will have died in recent years, for example, because certain cancer drugs were not made available on the NHS due to cost.
It may be cheaper, for example, to use broad radiation treatment around someone's groin, also damaging many 'useful' nerves, because it is the only cost-effective option. You'd have to pay if you wanted something better.
He's well-off, and at the point of first treatment did have BUPA insurance then too, but ended up going with the NHS (ok, they're not awful, some would say they're pretty good). Well, he had a bad experience, for example, the anaesthetist failed to notice the container of blood beside the operating table that came from his stomach, that came from when one of the docs had stabbed his stomach sphincter trying to get the device through.
He's wondering too now about the prostate cells that are giving the PSA reading...where did they come from? Prostate out, supposedly intact. Did they split something mid-operation? Was it just kind of there before? Assumed cancerous.
Thanks for your help. This thread could literally save his life.
