By the time I was able to get the money transfered and into the correct hands it was almost 72 hours. It took that long to get a stent put in. The damage done to my heart withing those 72 hours was pretty severe

Some fun memories of being in Mexican hostipals.

-I had an IV in my arm for 4 days. It was in my right arm. Everytime I would bend my right arm and beeping sound would go off and a nurse would have to come by and turn it off. Well, I was half asleep, have knocked out by all the drugs they were giving me and woke up to an nurse restraining/tying my arms to the metal rails on the bed. Freak me the **** out.

-The city I was in was kinda in the mountains, and pretty munch no one spoke English in the hospitals. So trying to communicate was nearly impossible since my Spanish was limited.

-The last night I was in the hospital I was moved out of ICU and into a normal room, which was the ****tiest room I had ever seen. Anyways, I had a friend bring me some clothes (they cut my clothes off of me at some point and thru the process of being transfered to different hospitals my clothes were lost). So I finally wanted to sleep with some clothes on and feel semi normal. So in order to put a shirt on they had to disconnect a part of the IV that was in my right arm. No big deal, right? Well later that evening I wake up from sleeping and feel a wet spot on the bed. At first I thought I pissed the bed but then I I see a ton of blood on my hand. They forgot to cap my IV after I put my shirt on lol. There was a pool of blood on the floor and on the bed. I get up and go out to the hallway and start yellling for a nurse. One finally shows up, wipes me down with a towel, changes the sheets, and then leaves.

Cliffs: Don't have a heart attack in Mexico
That's one of the worst experiences i've ever heard. Jesus. Hope your health's better.

The old Mexican heart attack, eh. I always assumed that guy was relatively young.

Thanks Tyler

My heart function is still below 30% and probably will not improve very much at all but it could always be worse

El D,

I was 35 when that happened. I had no prior heart problems nor was there any family history of heart disease.

Thanks Omar

I would suggest having a heart attack as close to home as possible since 1) people speak English where you live so you will be able to communicate with them and 2) Traveling afterwards sucks. I had to take a plane from Mexico to Houston and then Houston to Detroit. I could not even walk through the security check point without almost falling down. They actually almost stopped me from boarding the plane in Houston stating that I was not in any condition to fly. I had to pretty much beg them to let me on the plane so I could get home.

Thanks Jmakin

there were other things that I didnt mention in that post like

-they would not let me eat or drink anything for the first 2 1/2 days I was in the hospital. I remember asking repeatedly for aqua and the nurses just shaking their heads no.

-The third hospital I was in was a University hospital so along with the registered nurses there were students. Well I mentioned I had an IV in my right arm but they let the students practice drawing blood on my left arm. I must had been poked over 20 times while I was there and they missed my veins the majority of the time. When I left the hospital the inside of my left arm from my wrist to my elbow was black and blue. My right arm was bruised as well from the IV in that arm.

The whole experience was terrible.

what does heart at 30% mean? Are you fine day-today?

Its heart function

My understanding is that a healthy normal person has a heart function in the high 60%

Mine is in the mid 20s%

An interesting thing I learned during this experience is that once you damage a part of your heart it never comes back. The rest of your heart learns to adapt and tries to make up for it.

The whole front of my heart is dead I guess.

Am I fine today? In a lot of ways yes. I won't ever be able to run a marathon or play a game of basketball but I can walk and get around. I get tired real easily now tho.

Damn, < 30% EF + MI at a young age. Do you have a defib?
09-03-2014 , 12:57 AM
Gambit,

Man, that's an intense story.

Did you have some specific heart abnormality that led to that or was it just unknown/bad luck?

Yes sir

Had one put in a few months ago

Boston Scientific is the brand

Was a painful experience in and of itself. Was on pain meds for a week and could not raise my left arm above my head for 2+ weeks.

I know all about it. I ran a pacer/defib clinic in a hospital for 2 years. Checked many Boston Sci devices, wound checks, gave advice. Just be glad it didn't get infected!

Nice

Yeah, it healed up really well. I was super concerned about that.

Seems like a good field to work in. Everyone I dealt with when it came to the defib was an ex nurse or w/e and switched over to working for Boston Sci. I was tested 3 times for the device. Originally there were gonna put a defib inside me that was less intrusive than a regular one but in the end my insurance would not cover it since they deemed it experimental.

Speaking of checking the devices, it is such an weird feeling to be sitting there and have someone speed up your heart. The fact that someone else has that control is an odd feeling.

Is it just me or does Mexican Heart Attack sound like either a kickass metal band or a delicious entree?

Hmm, sounds like their new defib that's leadless (no wires that go into the heart, just an electrode that kinda sits on top of the sternum). I heard they are having problems with reimbursement.

I would always warn my patients before I was going to do testing because some people get VERY symptomatic and freak out a little. Then you get some people who have no idea anything's being done at all. I can tell you that from the other side it's just as weird. The fact that I can speed someone's heart up or even slow it down in some cases to 40 or 30 bpm with the touch of a button is kinda wild.
