Here we've got one of the few government agencies with actual talent, working with 0.5% percent of the US budget, in a country whose students continue to fall further and further behind in the sciences. For all of the things we're screwing up at least we can point to things like this as a lasting, constructive accomplishment that goes beyond the day-to-day trifling things that time will quickly forget.
Fair enough, I guess I'm just surprised they're doing this (the live show and all that) for a pretty standard sort of deal. Hope it goes well LDO

Lowering a 2000 lb. vehicle on Mars, with a freaking rocket crane, isn't a "standard sort of deal". wtf.

It's NASA, you need to adjust your scale.
Mars landers aren't new. Unique landing devices aren't new.
This is a cool experiment in new technology but it's not like they think they found life on mars and we're all on the edge of our seats waiting to validate it.

For those who insist on thinking that NASA is landing $2.5B on Mars:
Wrong!
The value of the metal, plastic, glass, etc. that lands on mars is not even close to that number. The vast majority of the money went into wages for the people who made the rocket and the rover, not the actual materials.
