Weird and sad story. Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 was at 35000 feet enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and loses contact with Air Traffic Control about 2 hours into the flight. It was due to land 8 hours ago. No Mayday call or no contact with anyone.

yeah i dont understand how a plane can just lose radio contact completely, dont they have backup power to run the systems? unless... it was something incredible that just absolutely annihilated the plane so they had no chance at all to do anything like call mayday.

Latest unconfirmed reports say it crashed in South China sea. Considering it was at 35000 feet at one time and there was no contact at all, there must have been some massive system failure including communications or something destructive occurred in flight. Even with loss of all engines, they could still have issued Mayday/distress call... very odd.....

Really? I think on the scale of varies ways that a person will eventually die, a plane crash isn't that bad.

Definitely ahead of any type of cancer, dementia, ALS, etc...

Not to nit pick but if the plane broke open you would black out in like 5 or 10 seconds at that altitude.

Yeah, I haven't read any coverage outside of this thread, but first thing I thought of was Payne Stewart: everyone on board lost consciousness pretty much at once, and a plane manned by unconscious people can't be helped.

Paging W0X0F from his epic AMA thread. It just seems impossible that in this day and age a plane would disappear without a trace even for a short period of time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_So..._Learjet_crash

Quote:
On October 25, 1999, a chartered Learjet 35 was scheduled to fly from Orlando, Florida to Dallas, Texas. Early in the flight the aircraft, which was cruising at altitude on autopilot, quickly lost cabin pressure. All on board were incapacitated due to hypoxia — a lack of oxygen. The aircraft failed to make the westward turn toward Dallas over north Florida. It continued flying over the southern and midwestern United States for almost four hours and 1,500 miles (2,400 km). The plane ran out of fuel and crashed into a field near Aberdeen, South Dakota after an uncontrolled descent.

EDIT TO ADD: Just read that whole Wiki page, including the NTSB's "We don't know, but it was probably..." findings. The page also lists similar accidents, all involving small planes, and one 737 in 2005 in Greece.

This is the black box recording of flight 123 that killed the most ever....so chilling. This is just from the cockpit so I can't imagine everyone on the plane screaming and everything.

Wow, this is horrifying. Definitely paging w0x0f for some insider speculation. I just flew this same airline and model from KL a week ago. We got in a pretty insane thunderstorm and that was (after having flown ~300 times, still) pretty damn terrible, even that everyone still knew it was pretty standard. I can't imagine what these people would have gone through

edit: wow, they have only 15 of those 777s. Looks like a dodge to have flown that exact thing twice in the last three weeks... so chilling.
