my first thought. my dog is a black lab/terrier (?) mix. the black lab genes are very dominant, so she looks like a miniature lab, about 35 pounds.

we got her from a rescue organization, and i highly recommend you do too. save a dog! for the record, we went through www.labs4rescue.com but there are tons of worthwhile organizations.

Just get the Golden Retriever or the Lab. Don't let it become a big issue beforehand. Just come home with the puppy one day. Your girlfriend may be a little pissed at first, but that won't last long since they'll be a cute puppy involved. By the time it starts getting big, she'll be too attached to it to be resentful.

My best dog was a border collie/lab mix mutt. Smartest, fastest, most loyal blah blah blah. My next dog will likely be a Vizsla.

Agree with those who suggested a Corgi.

I played with a Corgi at the dog park the other day. Very nice dog, but man do they look funny. You couldn't tell if the dog was sitting or not. I look at this picture and imagine all these dogs thinking "help, I'm not the right size!" I don't mean that as a bad thing, I'd have no problem owning one.

If I were going to get a medium dog it'd be a smaller Vizsla.

They can get up to 60-70 pounds I believe, but are usually smaller. They are very similar to Weimaranners, but brown instead of grey, and not as broad. My definition of medium is a little large I think, as I have a lab and a lab mix that weigh in for a combined 160 lbs.
