but the first one has a capacitor instead of a regular battery which makes it much more reliable in extreme temps and with the heat in socal think its worth the extra $$$.
if any one has any thoughts on this one vs one of the cheaper models pls lemme know.
I went through two of them. They just crapped out totally. Could have been because I had the battery versions and the Vegas heat is brutal. But anyway the new one I have is even better quality and has been fine in the heat so far. On particularly hot days I detach it and put it in my console tho.
Other thing I like about this new one I have is the power plugs into the suction mount which makes it really easy to feed the cord around the edge of the windshield for a really nice look.
I'm guessing any of these devices you'll need to get different cables if you want to hardwire since they assume people are fine with plugging it into their outlet.
Think I'm gonna get the Viofo A119 based off his review.
Is heat a known issue with the G1W? It's been 90+ here for 2 straight months (not as hot as Vegas, I realize) and I park my car in a surface lot and have had no problems.
Not very.. to be honest that stuff is a luxury. These unit sbouod be "black"... as in passive and invisible to daily use. When you first get it, you will be looking at the footage as a novelty... later you nust want it there as a back up incase something happens, you wont be pulling the footage at all.
The wifi most of these units have is extremely slow anyway... and if you are 1080@30fps or higher, these snipets of video take what seems like forever to download over wifi.
My preference is for pulling the memory for footage.
ya im not planning on viewing much of the footage, really just want something that is discreet and that i don't have to pay any attention to on a daily basis, just set and forget.
pretty sure i'm going to go with the A119 i linked above as i really like the form and the capacitor instead of battery is good for the socal heat.
is $10 more to add gps so basically nothing, but just not sure i WANT it to have gps as im almost always driving over the limit.
On the blackvue I can turn off the speed indicator and location services... a good thing.
One thing you want to do before pulling the trigger is to go on youtube and take a look at the footage others have posted that use your potentional unit to make sure its of the quality you are expecting... there is a great variety of image qualities frame rates available above and beyond what is quoted in the ad technical details.
You've probably already seen the video, but this video shows all you need to know about the dashcam and the video quality. To me, night video quality is very important as many cheaper dashcams will lose a ton of quality then making it almost useless to use at night.
I kind of like having WiFi. I can check footage on my phone, download some clips of stuff I want to show real quick to friends, stuff like that where if I had to physically move the card to my computer I wouldn't bother. But yeah it's a luxury. The most important considerations for me in order were (1) video quality (including night), (2) reliability, especially because I wanted a hard wired installation and I didn't want to be faced with the dilemma of ripping everything out and buying a better camera or continually replacing a crap model every year, and (3) ease of use, to encompass starting/stopping and working with footage.
Caught an accident on my camera today. Unfortunately I didn't have the audio turned on because the collision was pretty damn loud. Just a rear end collision but he hit hard enough to make it a four car incident and totally blew out the back end/window of the first car he hit. Don't text and drive.
Totally fine, thanks. Luckily I had noticed this guy driving like an ass and was leaving enough room for this to happen or for him to cut in front of me. Also lucky there was a clear exit lane for me to move over to as right before and after that spot there was very little shoulder and then a guardrail.
Got another noteworthy video yesterday. This one scared the crap out of me. ~3' chunk of solid ice flew off a truck and hit my windshield. My EZPass flew straight back to the back seat. I thought for sure it was a piece of ice that flew through the window. I'm going to start keeping the mic on because this was so awesomely loud. Luckily there was no damage, but if there had been this video probably would have been an asset when I called Werner Trucking.
Screenshot of the moment of impact:
And the mostly boring video, just the first few seconds are relevant:
Does anybody have one of these dash cam / rearview mirror things that you attach to your current rearview? Does it look dumb? It looks like it would look dumb.

I do, and I got one for my dad as well. Both of us like it. The mirror is actually really big which is nice. I've posted a few videos itt taken with mine. Probably a different make/model but they all seem to be pretty similar.

Cool, thanks. What make/model do you have? Did you get an extra-long power cable and artfully string it around your windshield etc, or do you charge it when not driving, or...?

I also purchased a 10' extension cable to run back to the rear camera. The provided cable would not have made the full run cleanly. Both that and the power cable run up along the top of my windshield, tucked under the roof fabric. The power cable was long enough to run over my drivers side door, down behind and under the seat, and up to the center console charging port. Installation of the front camera and power cord is super easy, bu the rear camera takes a bit more time and technical ability. If you want the screen to automatically switch to the rear camera with guide lines when you put your car in reverse, you'll need to wire the rear camera into your backup light.
