The hardest job in this battle goes to the dude with the knife having to close the gap and "get within grappling distance". The guy with the bat isnt just gonna stand there and swing. Knife man moves forward, bat man moves back. He can't just bull rush him like everyones saying. The dude with the bat is gonna try keep his range while jabbing and swinging.
Also, everyone thinks EVERY strike from the bat is a full fledged homerun swing to obliberate his opponents head. Just a 20% power shot from a bat is gonna do serious damage while keeping bat guy in a good defensive mode.
Further more, even IF knife man gets inside, insanely hard task, it doesnt = insta-kill.
I disagree with your bat strategy. Bat swinger should commit to one extremely powerful swing. He doesn't have to wind back and be obvious, but when he swings, he should commit. A strong enough swing just cannot be absorbed. But a 20 percent power swing? Terrible idea. It'll have little effectiveness and has big potential downsides.
The bat advantage is that it should be able to make the first strike. Swung hard enough it can hit just about any body part with enough force to serious deter any normal human.
This is assuming the bat is an appropriate size for the swinger. A 110 lb woman trying to swing Julio Franco's 37 ounce wooden bat will be useless, but give her a little league 20 ounce composite bat and she's got a serious weapon. Lighter weight little league style bats will be the best for fighting.
