Donkey Kong diva denied in Cartoon Network depiction lawsuit

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...iction-lawsuit

Sounds like the Judge basically laughed him out of court.

Quote:
The television character does not match the plaintiff in appearance," Thompson ruled (via AP). "GBF appears as a non-human creature, a giant floating head with no body from outer space, while Plaintiff is a human being.

"And when GBF loses his title, the character literally explodes, unlike Plaintiff.

Lol at the idea GBF isn't based on Mitchell. But maybe that's not the legal standard.

It's not, you have a legal right to parody under 1st amendment. Even if they named it billy mitchell directly he'd have no case. Lol what a turd.

Yeah, I'm sure there are plenty of guys named Ace and Gary who haven't sued SNL.

The Donkey Kong world record has been broken several times since this thread was last bumped.

Donkey Kong crown reclaimed: World record score breaks 1.2 million

Quote:
May 9, 2016
Competition over a world record score in Nintendo’s 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong grew to a fever pitch this week, with former champ Wes Copeland has reclaiming his title with a nigh-unbeatable score of 1,218,000...

...Copeland’s latest achievement will be difficult to reproduce, given that several luck-based factors pushed his score past all other previously held records. Arcade gaming enthusiasts note that there is still room for improvement with regard to specific strategies, but competitors will face an uphill battle in getting consistent luck on their side.

Copeland previously claimed the Donkey Kong world record crown in January with a score of 1,190,000. The achievement ranked as the highest Donkey Kong score ever recorded for a scant few months before competitor Robbie Lakeman logged a score of 1,190,200 in April.

Currently, Wiebe and Mitchell rank at No. 18 and No. 19, respectively, in the worldwide Donkey Kong leaderboards.
this made me feel pretty sad

Did anyone see Nintendo Quest (free on amazon prime streaming): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3063470/

Some guy attempts to collect every official NES game in person (no online buying). It's pretty fun, and has some nice cameos from Billy Mitchell and Walter Day. It reminded me of this movie, although it's not as good.

Never heard of this before, but just watched it and it was pretty enjoyable. Nothing groundbreaking, but a total nostalgia trip for anyone who grew up with the NES.

Are there any more documentaries displaying video game rivalries? I know that there are plenty documentaries in general with regards to video games, but would love to know if there are any more out there that depict competitive play other than fighting and FPS games.

Me neither! I live in London at the moment so will to have some friends send over the Blu-Ray versions of Nintendo Quest & NQ Power Tour.

I reccommend:

Chasing Ghosts (classic arcade games)
Ecstasy of Order (Tetris)
High Score (Missile Command)

I enjoyed Ecstasy of Order. Will give the other two a go.

I'd recommend Word Wars too. It's scrabble, so not arcade games, but it's done in a similar vein and has a cast of eccentric characters.

I heartily second the nomination of Word Wars - it's great. I liked it so much that I read the book 'Word Freak' by Stefan Fatsis. The movie is not exactly based on the book, but it includes a lot of the same characters, so if you loved the movie, you'll love the book.

Either one on Netflix?

I rewatched Word Wars a few days before thethethe's recommendation. It's available on You Tube.

There's also an interesting Monopoly documentary out there. But, I couldn't find a free link.

I hadn't heard of these ones, so thanks a lot for recommending! Very excited
Hopefully the girlfriend will enjoy them as much as the King of Kong. If not, I'm sure I will!

I just read an awesome book called "Ready Player One"
This guy starts a video game company with his friend; they create this virtual reality video game that takes over the world and upon his death he plants an "egg" within the game that when found will give the person all of his fortune and control of the reality. Your completely immersed in this video game.....great read.

Billy Mitchell doesn't appear to have a Twitch stream, which makes me sad. Only person I'd consider watching play video games, the GOAT

I'm sure there's some Korean ones that have been subbed into English from the Starcraft scene. Oldboy, where ex-player turned commentator Nal_rA tries to come out of retirement and qualify for one last tournament, was pretty good. No idea where you'd find them though, think it was torrented when it was out but prob not still seeding

edit - never mind, it's easily found on youtube

It is a good book but a lot of the 80s references seemed a little forced.

Loved the book. Heard a movie was being made of it and hoped it would have a decent enough budget to do it justice. Looked into it and it is being directed by ****ing Steven Spielberg. Can't wait!
