It's about gaining a balance between that and full on groupthink.
06-29-2017 , 05:28 PM
Yeah definitely, and that's why I initially said that it's totally fine to still land in the minority after giving proper weight to the other side.

All valid points and a well thought out eloquent reply lkj. I just think its very valuable to have a voice that challenges common believes an ideas. I think a group with a variety of opinions is more likely to come to a intelligent consensus or further any given idea then one without a certain element of friction.
I personally value a respectful disagreement since it can give valuable insight in different way of thinking.

In my opinion there also issues that do not have one clear cut correct answer. In some cases multiple people can disagree without on of them being wrong.

donjonnie, don't you have some conspiracy-theory beliefs about 911 or the moon landing or something like that?
06-29-2017 , 05:55 PM
That's yak
06-29-2017 , 05:58 PM
Nope. donjonnie doubts the official version of the moon landing and 9/11:

On 911 yes I believe the official story is not what actually happened. I don't know what exactly happens but I think there is enough evidence to proof some degree of foreknowledge among a group of people with massive financial means at their disposal.
The moon landing I think took place although I think there is a possibility some of the pictures are fake or doctored.

Edit: I stand by both of those post although the second one was worded a bit snarky.

Oh lord

Well at least Howard has donjonnie on his side.

I don't know how to go about convincing 911 conspiracy theorists, but moon landing not being fake should be obvious to anyone who's not a complete brain dead drooler and proof can be summarized in 2 words
Spoiler:

Lol, ok dude. You "dont know for sure."

I suspect that sorts of views I'm talking about are consistent with, say, thirty per cent of the population. So I don't think they're at all like sandy hook nutters or moon landing weirdos or JFK assassination conspiracists. That the majority doesn't agree with me troubles me not at all, even I don't quite know at what point a particular view becomes validated. I'm obviously staying away from articulating an example, seeing as I don't want to tee up any merits debates.

I think we have yet to meet someone who knows everything about what happened that day and is completely sure about all of it. I'm pretty sure about all the important things though, terrorists flying planes into the WTC and it collapsing and all.

My hot takes on climate change are quite a bit hotter (pun intended), seems like a much easier target.

the failure of 9/11 arguments isn't much to do with science and sensibility. it's that talking about it in a non-sympathetic or an authoritarian way is a huge, huge disregard for those who lost their friends.

Im sorry but that has to be the worst argument ever for not discussing something imo. Im going to slowly back away from this mess now.

LKJ - how many Malcolm Gladwell books do you own?

Yak -

Chop,
None. Coincidentally I had read the first couple of chapters of The Tipping Point within the past month, but was pretty underwhelmed so far. Haven't read any of his other stuff.

(The question seems like a dig, but I guess I don't get it.)

LKJ - I was poking fun at your support of the wisdom of crowds theory applied to political viewpoints. Maybe I should have gone with a Surowiecki reference instead but he's a lot less well known.

It seems your toe is still in the vortex? Perhaps your whole foot?

Again, I claim the bounty. It's for your own good.

Howard's posting in that thread is high quality, he should contribute as much as he wants
