My parents got a call from my dad's cousin's son this afternoon. He and his wife are in Niagara Falls today (they live in NYC area) and are staying overnight and they thought they'd stop by my parents' place tomorrow. They'll call tomorrow with an arrival time, and they're bringing their 3 kids and a puppy. They weren't clear about whether they're planning to stay overnight (but that seems to be the plan), and if so, how long they're staying. They mentioned they're headed to Montreal "eventually."

I'm not too clear on the etiquette for this kind of thing, but seems to me 24 hr notice is a little short for five people and a dog to show up out of nowhere for a visit (last time my parents saw or probably even talked to the cousin was 20 years ago--they didn't even know he was married). That's not normal, is it? My parents are in their late 70s and my mom is pretty stressed out about having all these people and a dog show up tomorrow.

That was last month with my jury duty ****. I dont even follow or sub this thread.

"but that seems to be the plan"?
07-02-2017 , 09:04 PM
jmakin,

good, cya.

Seems to be the plan b/c they didn't mention staying over and it's possible "eventually going to Montreal" could mean they're planning to leave Niagara Falls tomorrow, drive 90 minutes to my parents', visit, and then drive 6 hours to Montreal and stay there Monday night.

If they just assume they are staying over, that is pretty BOLD, but I can't see someone being that presumptuous after not seeing someone for 20 years.

It seemed bold, but my mom was preparing the guest room and trying to find the air mattresses when I talked to them.

Greg,

I think that's pretty rude and presumptuous of them to expect your parents to put them up on such short notice. I would only ever do this with really close family and friends and there would only be 1-2 people being put up. Generally speaking the only times when short notice has been given has been when there are funerals and I would always offer to go to a motel if it was inconvenient. Your relatives sound like they just want free accommodation tbh. In the same circumstances I wouldn't even consider asking elderly relatives to put 5 people and a dog up, when I have barely been in contact with them. I'd stay elsewhere and organise to take them out to lunch or something to catch up. I would be stressed if I had a family of 5 plus dog rocking up tomorrow who I barely knew and were staying for an indeterminate time and I'm not even close to being in my 70s! Your parents should ring them and let them know it's not convenient for them to have guests atm but they would enjoy catching up with them over lunch/dinner.

Well maybe it is just a pop-in visit on their way to stay over in Montreal tomorrow night. Seems crazy to me to stop in for a couple of hours in the afternoon and then drive 7 hours (more like 8 or 9 with the long weekend traffic) but who knows?
07-02-2017 , 09:42 PM
I hate stuff like that. No wonder your mum is stressed!
07-02-2017 , 09:43 PM
"yo I'm coming by tomorrow with 5 people" and assuming you can stay over is an absurd move
07-02-2017 , 09:47 PM
which is why i think it isn't the case. dog almost 100% confirms that.
