Fwiw...A very successful businessman that I once spoke with said that we're subconsciously programmed to believe that people with facial hair (esp. moustaches) are untrustworthy. If you grew up watching cartoons, most of villains sported some sort of facial hair. Does this have any plausibility? It's up to you.

btw, the correct answer for almost all of those questions depends almost entirely on your chances of getting your job in the first place.

if youre almost guaranteed to get the job, dress as conservatively as possible. if you think your chances are initially slim, go with something bold/daring/wacky that works for you and hope the interviewer loves it. you wont get that advice from any professional but its unquestionably correct.

You should've covered your beard with band-aids, that's what I did in my last interview and I'm now a multimillion dollar CEO.

the article i was referencing was making the point that in wasn't just celebrtities, beards were making a comeback across teh board including office workers

i don't know who ed hardy is, but if people were wearing him to work, then i would probably consider it as well

If you're like me, it takes you about 2 weeks to grow it back.

Shave it. Once in there, grow it back.

sorry for so many questions, but this is the last one i promise, do you do any recruiting or just hiring? and if so what are acceptable recruiting methods? would you ever take anyone to a strip club or use other adult entertainment? what do you think of people who do use this technique? is that in "bad taste" or clever? is it ok to use sex to sell? if so, is it ok for a woman applicant to show cleavage and if so how much?
Not professional opinion, but I know what I'm talking about.

here goes:

bowtie -- NO
suspenders -- NO
cowboy ties -- definitely NOT
belt buckles -- big ones??? no way. dress belts only.
suits not colored black/blue -- shades of grey, beige okay also.
khaki pants with sport jacket -- only on the golf course or country club.
non white/blue shirts -- should always be pastel. thread-width stripes okay.
3 piece vs 2 piece -- 3 piece okay for lawyers and professors, 2 piece for the rest of us.
3 button vs 2 button -- 2 button fine. 3 button, kinda pretentious.
contacts vs glasses -- doesn't matter.
dress shoes with no laces -- doesn't matter.
women who wear something other than pantsuit -- skirts and nice shirts okay.
perfume/cologne -- ok, but NOT strong.
jewelry -- for men, wedding rings and wristwatches only. For women, earrings, rings, necklaces all okay. Anklets, no. Everthing must be non-guady and tasteful. No giant hoop earrings, for example.

Missed these:

do you do any recruiting or just hiring? HIRING

and if so what are acceptable recruiting methods? We have to go through consultant firms.

would you ever take anyone to a strip club or use other adult entertainment? Never.

what do you think of people who do use this technique? I've heard it
used often in sales for getting contracts.

is that in "bad taste" or clever? is it ok to use sex to sell? It worked.
Some of (our) clients EXPECTED it. But this was for sales, not for hiring.

if so, is it ok for a woman applicant to show cleavage and if so how much?
In our technical world, no, not if she wants to be taken seriously.
In sales, I suspect it would be a positive.
In the corporate world, nooooooo way.

good catch. black is okay for undertakers, wedding parties and ringmasters.

businessmen can get away with "charcoal", which would be
a really, really dark gray. preferably with subtle pinstripes.

Job Interview Question:

I already had the "formal" job interview, and I received a job offer. I'm going in tomorrow to discuss salary and more job specifications (timetables, when my first day is, etc.)

Can I switch to business casual or should I still go in with full business attire?

How long do you wait for the call back usually? Interview was this past Thursday, when do I give up on waiting? One week?

I know they are doing a major project this week, that also might be why no call.

I'd be tempted to switch to whatever the interviewers were wearing from the original interview, but you are probably better off with the suit. An offer isn't a job so don't get too comfortable yet.

IMO...Suit all the way if you're planning to counter/negotiate the offer.

Agreed. Suit all the way. Once the handshakes are over, and
the job is in hand, inquire about appropriate office attire.

Typically, at the end of the interview, they give you a date by which you
should be informed of their decision. No matter what, you should send them
a polite email thanking them for the interview and opportunity and express
your hope that you get the job. Therein, ask when you can be informed,
yay or nay.

We hire through a consultant firm, so the agents usually do the ascertaining and
communicate that to the potential hiree.

Having said all that, email them immediately thanking them and politely asking
about their decision.

If no response, this is not good, but follow up with another email or phone call
on Thursday morning.

What am I, a method actor?

On the beard issue, I have a pretty poor excuse for a beard that is a "2" on my beard trimmer. I wore it to my job interviews and got hired, and I think it is better than the alternative of looking a few years younger than my age.
