Haha was about to post how despite the whole Hemingway thing, mojitos have a strong specifically homosexual connotation to them nowadays, for those concerned about the image of their cocktails. Then you posted that.

I still feel kinda gay about ordering it (maybe because I remember the Disaronno commercials a few years ago as the most obnoxious thing in the world), but my favorite drink as of late has been Jack and Disaronno on the rocks, awesome combo.

My girly drink before that was Tequila Sunrises, which is tequila OJ and a bit of grenadine, ****ing delicious.

Bourbon old-fashioned, whiskey sour, bloody mary, LIT, G&T, Manhattan, 7&7, julep, Jack & coke

All of these are starters for what I'd consider "manly." Anyone saying there is no such thing as a manly mixed drink and therefore not drinking any mixes is an idiot who is cutting off their nose to spite their face.

screwdriver not mentioned yet?
a friend of mine who grew up in and never left East Palo Alto drinks three mixed drinks: beautiful (cognac/grand marnier), gin and juice and 8 ball with a shot of cognac.

When I bartended I had a guy order a drink one time and I stole the idea and have been drinking it ever since. Tuaca and Stoli vanilla, equal parts, on the rocks. Amazing.

Jim Beam and Coca-Cola here. Good for summer days. I'll also get a daquiri sometimes when it's real hot. Just think of it as an adult snowcone.

For whatever reason, they've never appealed to me, although everyone I know seems to think they're the best drink ever.

My go to mixed drink: Mojito. They are ****ing delicious and if anyone thinks worse of me for drinking one, I will punch them in the face.

(whiskey & coke, rum & coke, gin & tonic, vodka tonic, etc).

The only thing that's really going to draw attention to you is if you go with something that has lots of garnishes or a bright pink color.

Sure, but it still depends. One vacation to the Caribbean it was my mission to get a cheesy looking drink with an umbrella because they look so ridiculous. But every girly beverage I ordered didn't come with a f'ing umbrella and it was pissing me off. But it was a "pissed off" in an amusing and manly way.

The thread in general reminds me of a character from a novel I remember who liked to screw with people. He would go to a bar and order some randomly named drink that he just invented and when the bartender would go, "Ummm, I've never heard of a drink called Sam in a Sweater" the character would go, "no way..really?" and then proceed to direct him through the most ridiculous recipe having the poor guy's head spinning with all the different things in there. He would end up with some virtually undrinkable vodka/tequila/grenadine/tabasco/olive-juice combo with a banana garnish or something.

But as Steve Martin put it, a drink with an umbrella in it means you are a somebody.

yeah wtf @ no mixed drinks period.

I'm a gin and tonic person, but actually draw the line at anything that seems at least as manly to me as a mojito. and that's for evening situations where I'd otherwise drink beer. during the day, at the beach or w/e, anything goes imo.

Absolutely. This is my go-to summer drink, although mostly at home where I can drink a half dozen of them and not have to pay a ridiculous price. Plus they take too long to make to order in a bar.

The banana garnish made me lol, but mostly because I imagined it unpeeled.

If the question of how manly you are comes down to what you are drinking, I doubt you're very manly to begin with.

Drink what you want, esp. if you are picking up girls. Girls don't give a **** what you are drinking.

Jack and Coke is not manly to anyone over 50. I once ordered one in front of my dad and he looked like he wanted to punch or disown me. "Jack Daniels is a sipping whiskey, why the f@&% would you put coke in it?"

Crown on the rocks is my go to. If you want something sweet drink capt morgan rocks.

I'm assuming you are looking for more help that <clear liquor> and tonic. A solid one that I wouldn't say is too girly is the El Diablo:

Double shot of Tequila
Shot of creme de casis (it gets less manly if the bartender doesn't know this and you have to say it outloud)
Top off with ginger ale and a double squeeze of lime.
Well, here in Texas, right now those three rules definitely apply.
But that drink, the El Diablo, holy crap, that sounds GOOD. I love tequila, I will have to make/try that thing asap.

dos equis. :-/

Mojitos and caprihinas are great choices, mojitos especially if you can make them yourself with fresh fruit and ingredients. I won't order them unless it's a very upscale bar.

If you have so little of a noticable personality that what you're drinking has to define you, then you're doing it wrong. Completely.

What if we're using it just to accentuate our personality? Is that fine?
