Re: *****It's Not The Heat, It's The July LC Thread*****
My weekend has started off swimmingly. In-laws are here and I got in a car accident. Fortunately, nobody was hurt and it really didn't turn out to be a big deal, but of course it was a little scary.
It was a simple case of turning to say something to my MIL and it just being bad timing because in the moment I did that, I didn't see the traffic in front of me had stopped. Totally my fault, but I suppose it's something that happens a million times a day, so while I'm embarrassed, it's not like I was being reckless (I'm normally overly careful). I rammed my wife's car, who hit the car in front of her. I was able to slam on the brakes, so it wasn't nearly as bad as it could've been.
Also fortunately, the third-party's car went unscathed, so she left without needing any info or a police report. My wife's car was the hurt one, as it was sandwiched. Buckled hood, cracked grill, dented rear bumper. On the bright side, the hood's not so buckled that it won't stay closed, so the car is cool to drive. $2000 damage.
I did find some comedy in the whole incident. A cop happened to be behind us when it happened, so he came over when we all pulled over and were inspecting the damage. After the third-party left (and he already knew everyone was ok, that I was married to the woman I hit, and that there was no need for a police report), he pointed to my kids in my wife's car and asked, "Who are they?"
My first instinct was to ask how in the world that was relevant, but I bit my tongue and simply answered his question.

I'm inexperienced with this things (fortunately), but as far as I know, there will only be one deductible to be paid. There was no damage to my car. My wife's is the only one needing repair and the lady she ended up hitting had no damage and didn't even take our names. My agent didn't mention anything about a double deductible, but I guess we'll see (unless you mean something else by double deductible).
My agent thinks (he's checking on it) that my insurance company has first accident forgiveness since we've been with them so long with no claims, so it might not even raise our premiums. Even if it does, he doesn't think it would be so bad so as to make the $1,500 difference between the deductible and repair cost not worth it. If we ended up needing to pay ourselves without insurance, we'd probably skip the grill and rear bumper repair, as they're cosmetic. Worry about resale value down the road (no pun intended).
