Re: iPhone Thread Volume 3 - 4th Gen Announced

Is everyone just waiting for the 5? I don't have any complaints about the 4, but I think I'm going to go with the Galaxy S3 or wtf it's called next. Nothing against the iphone, I just like change and haven't had a droid yet (had a blackberry before the 4, lol).

On a sidenote, Otterbox's are awesome. Was hammered at the lake last weekend and my buddy dropped my phone in the lake when we were docking the boat. I just assumed iphones+water=lost cause so I didn't even go after it (in ~5 feet of water). He, on the other hand, had the financial motivation to try and salvage it. He jumped in, stepped on it and crushed it into the mud lol, dove down and got it, and when he came up the screen was on and it was working fine.

I powered it down and put it in a bag of rice for the night just in case, but haven't had a single problem with it (happened 6 days ago).

tl;dr

Cliffs:

May get a droid
iphone survived 60 seconds underwater

What's a good case/screen protector for the iPhone? I have an OtterBox for mine which works well but I'm looking for something slim which protects the screen from chemicals and other nasties. It'll be used by a roofer and he's gonna have grimy hands often.

Sudden name change after buying the phone? Completely legit.

Re: iPhone Thread Volume 3 - 4th Gen Announced

My plan is about to expire in a few weeks but I want to wait until the iPhone 5 comes out before signing another contract. Is it possible to unlock my phone and just use it with a carrier that doesn't require a contract (Wind/Fido/etc)? I have a 3GS running 5.0.

Renegade, most of the time yea you can unlock, but it depends what baseband you are using. Some are much easier to unlock than others, e.g. some require you to change your baseband and you cannot go back to the original, etc.

This is the combo I'm using now.

I love the Modello case. It's very slim and doesn't add much bulk to the case. I would get a black from the description that you give.

For the screen protector, SGP makes the best ones out there. I use the Ultra Optics. It's an anti-fingerprint protector which doesn't dull the display that much.

Let me add though that with the conditions that you describe, probably the Otterbox Defender is the best case for this person who is in this line of work. I wouldn't normally recommend this case because I think it's just hideous looking and takes away from the beauty of the iPhone. In this situation though, that is what I would probably get.

If you're switching, look at the HTC One X on AT&T. That is one sweet phone. It's been awful hard for me not to go out and buy that thing.

I though most contracts were basically month-to-month after it ran out. Meaning that you can keep your 3GS until the Fall, then re-sign (or change carriers, if you wish) when the 5 version comes out.

Re: iPhone Thread Volume 3 - 4th Gen Announced

Renegade, I would check what version baseband you have (Settings to General to About and look for Modem Firmware) and then google that version with terms like iphone unlock, etc, to come up with some good guides.

Like I said, depending on your version, some baseband are not currently unlockable, so you if you needed to unlock, you would have to change your baseband, which is a permanent change on your phone and can sometimes cause problems when trying to restore.

Like gunsmahler said, with the 5 coming out sooner than later, maybe renewing would be a good option. Or, the 4's still have good resell value if you wanted to try that idea.

Re: iPhone Thread Volume 3 - 4th Gen Announced

I just inherited a first gen touch. The donor said "It won't turn on, I don't know."

After a restore and a few other things I got it completely running, except the touch screen is completely unresponsive.

A new screen kit on ebay is less than $15, does anyone know if that also includes the touch sensor and will fix the problem or is the glass independent of the touch screen aspect?

Pretty rare problem from what I understand. I tried putting it in a bag of rice and that didn't fix it, wonder what caused this.

Want to be careful if buying on ebay as some are really cheap knockoffs and aren't great. Realistically if the screen is cheaper than $40 to $50, you are probably getting a POS part. Also, if it is anything like the iPhone the replacement is extremely difficult. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who isn't an electronic tinkerer or has done alot of work with tools given you have to remove about 20 screws the largest of which is 8mm and most are 4mm or less.
