A patent not willing to fight to see their kids because they want to avoid a court battle seems like an odd definition of personal sacrifice. Sounds like a selfish easy way out type of thing.

I doubt going through a custody battle is worse for a kid than growing up with out their father. But I dont have kids, nor read any literature on the subject so *shrug*

I can't believe people really care this much. It's his/her life to do with as he/she pleases.

lol, you are wrong too.

had I lawyered up and fought in court, my kids would have grown up without their mother.

unless they are in physical danger, you don't take kids away from their mother. ever. it's a nature thing.

I'm sure thin loves his kids just as much, if not more than pongo. Pongo would probably duke it out with kyle over Tamagotchi and Atlanta.

So they don't take kids from their mom unless they're in physical danger but had you fought the court battle you'd have got the kids.

The only thing I can take from this is you didn't bother to fight and left your kids in a physically dangerous situation. What a sacrifice you made!

if the judge would have awarded you sole custody, then their mother must have been a really terrible parent, which means they would have been better off with you. Especially considering you are the kind of parent whos willing to make a supreme sacrifice for the kids. So your position kinda doesnt make sense. Cognitive dissonance?

The range of opinions ITT is interesting. It seems in part to be related to how recently people were made aware of the issue and know the various facts. For example, one poster stated he thought the LPGA says you have to be born a woman to golf on tour. But that actually was changed 5 years ago and trans women can compete. Likewise, the Olympics have allowed transgendered atheletes to compete for 10 years.

Those talking about birth certificates may not realize that states allow you to change your birth certificate to reflect current gender, along with other ID documents like drivers licenses and passports.

There's been a lot of research over the last twenty years and more about the differences between sex, gender and sexual orientation that shows that those things are not the clear cut categories people used to think they were. It sort of reminds me of how some states had "one drop" laws that declared if you had any trace of nonwhite ancestry, then you were legally "colored" with all the restrictions that entailed. With todays advances in genetics I doubt anyone would claim racial purity based on science.

When you overlay various religious dogma attributing sin or evilness to anyone different, and a certain population willing to ignore science whenever it conflicts with their various thousands year old holy books, it easy to see the reluctance of some people to accept that their world view might be incorrect. But over time, facts generally win out over dogma. It's hard to believe now, but it wasnt all that long ago that a Virgina Supreme Court justice wrote that a ban on interracial marriage is legal in part because God originally put the different races on different continents, and they only started mixing because man messed up God's plan.

How is it so hard to believe that some parents would be open to their children feeling like they are a different sex then what they were born with ? I think pongo would act exactly as she said and comparing that with drug abuse is pretty ****ing dumb. My nephew has been through this for the last 4 years, he's 9 now, its kind of heartbreaking to see but also good to see that there are parents with a brain who dont immediately judge that thought and are able to work with it. These things happen and explaining them how to be a BOY or whatever that was and thinking it all goes away is pretty ignorant as well.

So what exactly happens after you've "educated" your kid and they still want to wear dresses and whatnot?

Thin,

I probably should have worded it slightly differently to prevent the derail, lol.

I should have just said that I doubt Thinman's book. "How to deal with your kids in crisis!" will sell very well and left it at that.

As to your first offer, well it's too, too kind, but I must decline....

This issue goes to the heart of one of the major causes of suicide in teenagers, so I do get a little passionate about it. I've conducted sit downs with numerous parents over the years, though primarily dealing with homosexuality and not gender issues.

Those kids need the reassurance that they are going to be loved regardless of what they are facing. I applaud pongo and others who will make their child feel accepted.
