Just read the Simo Hayha story. Holy badass.

And I like it when you guys put a passage in the post.

Am I going to regret the Nikki Catsouras pictures? How is it compared to those Russian maniacs? I've never seen that one and don't plan on it.

edit: ok. I put her name into google and clicked on the first link. I saw a tiny thumbnail with my squinted eyes but I think I'm going to have nightmares about that one. Jesus, her hair and scalp. omg why.... that was stupid. Really ****ing stupid. Is her head even still on?

She flipped her car onto an overpass and basically smushed her head.
When they turn the car over, her head is hair and smashed head parts.

The first hit on google has a map showing the area and of course she hits the only thing visible anywhere around, some toll booth.

Being a coroner when one of these bodies come in... I mean, they're probably desensitized to dead bodies and grossness but you'd imagine the poor guy remembers every inch of detail.

Did you look at the pictures? I'm very tempted by curiosity right now to get a closer look but every time I succumb to these pressures it's always a bad idea.

BTW, I went to the first 7 (/11) pages right now and re-read some of the stuff I missed. I thought about making a top-10 list (for F60) but there are a lot of excellent links. If I include one, I feel like I have to include 4 others. However, three stories stood above the rest for me. All 3 are wtf_unexplainedmystery though.

I think I can say that this thread is probably one of the best I've read on the internet. Let alone 2+2.

edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_penis_rule deserves an honourable mention to the top-3

Alrighty, time to add some content. Despite living in Vancouver, I've never heard of this. Finding this kind of shocked me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discove...007–2008

Quote:
Since August 2007, eight disarticulated (i.e. legless) human feet have been discovered in coastal British Columbia, Canada, and an eighth in nearby Washington, United States. The feet belong to five men and one woman, the two left feet having been matched with two of the six right feet. As of August 2008, only one foot has been identified; it is not known to whom the rest of the feet belong. In addition, a hoax "foot" was planted on Vancouver Island.

Quote:
Jimmy Carter had gone on a solo fishing expedition in his hometown of Plains, Georgia when the rabbit approached his boat, "hissing menacingly, its teeth flashing and nostrils flared and making straight for the president",[1] trying desperately to enter the boat, causing Carter to flail at the swimming creature with the oars from his boat.

Great thread. I was reminded of an artist whose work I saw at MoMA in 2009 that was very bizarre. Some of the stuff he did is David Blaine-esque.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tehching_Hsieh

Quote:
For one year between April 11, 1980 through April 11, 1981, Hsieh punched a time clock every hour on the hour for one year. Each time he punched the clock, he took a single picture of himself, which together yield a 6 minute movie. He shaved his head before the piece, so his growing hair reflects the passage of time. Documentation of this piece was exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2009, using film, punch cards and photographs.

Do people really get that grossed out by those pics? They don't effect me more than
"oh, ouch!" and I'm pretty normal, I think.

The Grove is particularly famous for a Manhattan Project planning meeting that took place there in September 1942, which subsequently led to the atomic bomb.
The address is

Quote:
Bohemian Grove is a 2,700-acre (1,100 ha) campground located at 20601 Bohemian Avenue, in Monte Rio, California,

Maggot cheese!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casu_marzu

Quote:
The larvae have powerful mouthhooks which can lacerate stomach linings or intestinal walls as the maggots attempt to bore through internal organs.
Pretty much nastier then you think when you watch the video of it.

"It is with much embarassment that I'm returning alive" is an awesome and hilarious quote.

Jesus, he wasted 28 of the last 53 years of his life living in a cave, rather than gamble that the war was not over.

He would have to be correct almost 53% of the time for this to be +EV.

nice one!

Quote:
Because the larvae in the cheese can launch themselves for distances up to 15 centimetres (6 in) when disturbed,[1][8] diners hold their hands above the sandwich to prevent the maggots from leaping. Those who do not wish to eat live maggots place the cheese in a sealed paper bag. The maggots, starved for oxygen, writhe and jump in the bag, creating a "pitter-patter" sound. When the sounds subside, the maggots are dead and the cheese can be eaten.[9]

Why is this the case?

Quote:
Casu marzu is considered toxic when the maggots in the cheese have died. Because of this, only cheese in which the maggots are still alive is eaten.
On the topic of disturbing food items, here's another one:

Just saw this documentary about him. Incredible stuff.

Quote:
Philippe Petit (born August 13, 1949 in Nemours, Seine-et-Marne) is a French high wire artist who gained fame for his high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on August 7, 1974.
Quote:
On August 7, 1974, shortly after 7:15 a.m., Petit stepped off the South Tower and onto his 3/4" 6×19 IWRC (independent wire rope core [5]) steel cable. He walked the wire for 45 minutes, making eight crossings between the towers, a quarter mile above the sidewalks of Manhattan. In addition to walking, he sat on the wire, gave knee salutes and, while lying on the wire, spoke with a gull circling above his head.
I had heard about him before, but watching it made me realise how much planning went into this, as they had to get to the top illegally and plan it all and such.

No idea how I had not heard of Nikki's crash before.

I think it's easier to look at those pictures than something like the d maniacs because you're not watching someone helplessly suffering and imagining them wondering why? or whatever as they die.
