I wonder what the legality of something like this is.
I guess I'm just a volunteer. There is no pay, just provided with food and shelter. And outfitted of course.

Same with me, we were told we could be sent to Iraq immediately after SOI all through bootcamp. Wasn't slated for a deployment until over a year later, and had pulled out of Iraq at that point.

No idea, but the Vatican supports the Kurds now. Just saw it on my homepage a few hours ago.
I assume the Kurdish government in Rojava is funding the Lions.

I don't know. I was hot **** at my job. My team or squad always won everything we did, I had a real knack for being able to perform and bringing individuals under my charge to the same level. Was the one of the few in my peer group to maintain a Squad for a large part of my enlistment (just in training).

Do as you wish, but you should probably contact a lawyer and inquire what charges you could potentially face if you are lucky enough to return to the U.S. alive.
Although the Shia militias likely will be OK with an American trying to get at their current #1 enemy, the threat of being taken POW by them is pretty real.
They also have pretty badass war music.
I admire your resolve, and wish you the best of luck however it goes.
edit: since I take a small interest in this ridiculous civil war music, here is the anthem of your enemy:
ISIS Nasheed (with English subs)
Sunni Extremists don't believe in instruments or (significant) electronic modifications. Partially due to this the Shia militias tend to go a little ham with the autotune and drums. It's actually pretty unreal how big of an industry war music from the middle east is.
I'm really not too worried about it. With all of these guys catching media attention, talking about having been there, returned, and have no legal trouble AND are in the spotlight... Not too worried.

I was infantry. Like I said, I get $930 every month. I wasn't in a career, just added an extra $700 to my monthly budget with a side job. I actually did security for a really shady part of my city over the summer, covered about a city block owned by slumlords. Stopped 2 guys mugging a group of females my first week on the job. Decided I was done with that, got a job on the airforce base near me at Charlie's Grilled Subs. Was eating 1000 calorie sandwiches for $5 everyday at lunch and using the airforce gym, was a pretty awesome time.

I'm really not full of ****. Try being a combat vet and watching all this **** on the news and online. I have a guaranteed stream of money, all my limbs, and my youth. Zero reasons to not go.

Sunnis and Shiites only differ in that when Muhammad died, one sect believes that his bloodline should be followed, and the other sect believes that Muhammad's highest cleric, or Imam, should be followed.
They have violence among themselves, but it's extremists, or jihadists, that are the enemy. The Koran really does say to "kill all non-believers". It's akin to Christian extremists not eating shellfish... Is that a terrible analogy?
