From a greater good perspective, intuitively it seems like if everyone had the plan to make an effort at taking down the attackers, then there would be fewer casualties, fewer attacks, and maybe even less widespread anxiety since belief in yourself to do something is empowering. Having said that, my plan is to try to get the hell out of there.

Assuming there are a lot of people around, if everyone rushed the shooter less people would die than if everyone ran, but since we can't train society to act that way it's probably best to run/hide unless you just happen to be in a good position when it starts to take the shooter out.

I would like to think I would attempt to take down the shooter if I'm in a positions to do so but with bullets flying around I'd probably jet it out of there.

Has there actually ever been a gunmen attack in an area with a bunch of armed civilians? I think it would be a huge failfest and a bunch of people would get killed by stray bullets

Yeah I think this would be a disaster. Police Officers make errors in judgement at times during combative scenarios, and they are presumably trained to make good decisions. Also, I think if someone courageously tried to tackle the attacker, he would probably get shot by the freaked out Arizona guy who is just shooting in the general direction of the attacker likely justifying it with saving a bunch of lives at the cost of a couple. And he may be right, but it's not his decision to make.

Edit:just checked-the attacker was subdued by unarmed bystanders. The only guy with a CWP didn't even have a chance to draw his gun.

Probably not. What does that tell you about the value of civilians being armed? As for stray bullets, ime most people that carry are better shots than, for example, the LAPD.

But it doesn't take "a bunch" of armed civilians. The Oregon mall shooter saw an armed civilian drawing a bead on him and killed himself. The armed civilian ended the rampage without even taking a shot.
