This will happen to almost none of us, and so in theory, it's probably not worth putting thought into. Even so, we read about horrible, unfair attacks that have happened everywhere from schools to movie theaters to beaches to trains to churches to airplanes to restaurants. My biggest interest is in what you plan to do if you're ever in one of these unfair situations. I say plan because who really knows what you'll do if it actually happens--there's all sorts of war studies throughout history on the difficulty in knowing how a person will react when actually faced with a scary situation. I'm wondering if people will be planning to find an exit and sprint out of the situation, look for a place to hide, or find a way to bring down the attacker. I'm including a poll.

Wife had an active shooter at work in past year. She grabbed a couple coworkers and hid in a utility closet that locked from the inside. Pretty solid choice.

We actually have active shooter training at work now along with the fire safely and CPR lectures. The official recommendation is to hit them in the heart with one of those ninja throwing stars.

Escape > hide > take down attacker. of course, you won't know exactly how successful any of the options will be, so circumstances will heavily change what you try to do.

one time in a college class, probably not too long after the vt shooting, on the first day of class we had a strategy/practice session on what we'd do if there was an active shooter. he had most of us hiding behind desks, and a couple of the guys hiding beside the door to the room, one on the side that it opens holding a backpack up in the air with the plan to slam it down on their hands when they entered and then the others by the door tackle him. thought it was a pretty decent idea, esp for a small room with no exits.

Hmm, around here most leave their rifles in the trunk and carry concealed handguns. I imagine most "active shooter" things in AZ wouldn't last long.
