Seems like my teacher friends, lawyer friends, and nurse friends are the only friends that EVER post about work, or at least post about it semi-routinely.

Not surprisingly these professions all have the potential for long hours. There may just be not that much else to post about when all you do is work, sleep, and go on Facebook.

So, 2+2, annoying or not?
This is obviously BS. I linked today's Whole Foods deal because it's ridiculously good ($20 GC for $10, limit 1) with my referral code but disclosed the interest. I only post those deals when they're obviously insane, such as the BuyWithMe $50 GC to American Apparel for $20 or the $20 GC to Amazon for $10 on LivingSocial.

Doing it every day is v. annoying.

That could be. I lean more towards the fact that these folks are generally pretty proud of how they turned out.

Posting about work no matter what kind of job it is seems pretty douchey to me. Mostly b/c of what Hey_Porter said--people want to brag about their job. I have a bunch of lawyer friends who do this.

This attorney that I knew but wasn't friends with had a twitter account that was absolutely hilarious. Judging from their website the account was clearly some aspect of an ill-advised marketing plan. Anyway, his tweets were all classic, stuff like (paraphrased):

- "Getting ready for a big trial next week. Defendant won't know what hit em"
- "Arbitrator just gave me everything we asked for in our complaint. I always love seeing defense attorneys speechless."
- "Client wanted to settle but I convinced them to go to trial. The verdict was three times what they offered!"
- "Putting in a lot of hours lately, but it's worth it when you give the insurance company check to the one who deserves it."

Heard through the grapevine that he lost a case that was absolutely horrendous to begin with, one of those cases that makes people hate plaintiffs attorneys. I put the dates together and it was his "big trial." Who knows why, but the twitter account is long gone, as is the link to it from the firm website (obviously).

Teachers do not have bosses nor do they have meetings nor parent conferences nor anything other than what we all saw them do when we were in school, which was "teach" (which is lol easy). That's all they do guys. The other stuff isn't there if kids aren't there to see it!

I went to a rural HS and we had practices from 7:30-8:30 with classes starting at 8:45 (or so). It wasn't that uncommon to have kids around at that time getting extra help or just doing homework since they'd catch a ride with a sibling/family member.
suburban public. We had 2,800 kids when I was a freshman, but they opened a new school and that took us down to 2,100 for my last 3 years. Was the smallest of the 12 5A (biggest classification) schools in my county. School started at 7:20 though so I guess thats a little early but you weren't allowed on campus before 6:50. School let out at 2:10 and you had to be gone by 3 unless you had a school related event.

I think the issue is that teachers got so sick of people saying they were overpaid and had such a cushy job ("6 hours a day for 180 days a year amirite?") that they decided to take every opportunity they could to say "ZOMG my job is the hardest ever I worked 5:30am to 6pm and still have to grade papers!!!!1!!". Truth is that it's somewhere in between.

This turned into an off-topic rant so feel free to not read this or delete it if a mod feels its inappropriate for this thread.

I agree with this, but I really think its a product of a lot of people who have grown up expecting things to be handed to them with little to no effort.

I think I have a background that allows me some insight to this. My dad, sister, and uncle are all teachers. My aunt homeschools 4 kids. I tutored throughout college, took education classes (a huge joke, 3 of the easiest 5 classes I took), and interned full time one summer at a year round school before deciding that ultimately I like money to much to do anything with such a structured earning potential down the road.

I have never heard my sister complain about her job or hours. Yet, she has maintained a job working at a restaurant Friday and Saturday nights and usualy does about 10 hours of babysitting a weekend. She is also helping run the student council for no extra pay and helps coach soccer. My dad works every sporting event imaginable for his school, fills in for coaches who are out/suspended during games or practices, teaches drivers ed, and drives limos on the side. His only complaint is that the state is trying to make driver's ed non-mandatory and has cut the maximum hours he is ALLOWED to work. My uncle coaches football and works a third shift job for 2 nights a week. He only complains about how hard it is to keep the good athletes in class so they can play every game. I feel like all of them know what they got into and like the profession more than the alternatives which allows them to remain happy waking up every day. They all also found a solution to the money problem that seems to be the root of the issue for many of the teachers who seem to resent the profession.

I cannot even grab a drink with any of my friends (closer to acquantiances bc they're all girls that my good friends met in college) without hearing about how bad their week was and how many papers they have to grade. Forget it if a kid got sick in class or a fight broke out. The, "I have to wake up at X:XX so I can't YYY at 8 pm" is also one of the weakest excuses I hear. Guess what, the other people I'm out with all work too because none of us hang out with any non-professionals any more. Some (2) of these girls have even expressed to me that they had hoped to graduate and get married soon after so they didn't have to work and that they just plan to teach in the meantime since they haven't found a spouse. I have had to restrain myself and walk away because I feel that this is one of the professions where people like this are unlikely to succeed and unlikely to benefit their employer (in this case by being a quality teacher).

cliffs: somehow teaching became the profession for girls (I feel like guys default elsewhere, but I dont know where that is) that went to college but don't want to work. They are not shy of letting you know how bad it is because their frame of reference is the story they created in their head where they never have to hold a real job post-college.

The issue with whining about work hours is

A) Especially in the case of teachers, you picked that ****ing job, man. Jesus Christ if I was one of the 9.1% of Americans currently unemployed reading that stuff would make me homicidal.

B) Everyone thinks they are special and that nobody else works hard. Man, everybody works hard. Nobody likes their job. That's why you get paid.

C) I lied about teachers being the worst profession, though it may be the worst common profession. The super hyped self-promoting entrepreneur is the worst.

Actually I thought that was one of the better statuses (stati?), apart from the viral "post this" bit at the end. Try to consider the circumstances others may be facing, that's a nice message without being overly sappy. Only later did it occur to me that such considerations could be used for evil as well as good. "Hey fatty, might want to double up on the diet pills, the dose you're taking now isn't doing the trick."

Same teacher as earlier:

"made a 5 year old boy stand in front of the class, tell the class what he said, and then apologize to the entire class for calling a little girl fat and making her cry. He began crying when I put him in time out for 5 minutes and when I said, "Don't cry for me Argentina." he cried harder and said, "I'm in big trouble and you don't know my name." Oh, kids....how precious."
