i guess we can quibble about the meaning of "best guess" but to me it's approximately equivalent to "theory". not in the sense of "oh, my best guess is vancouver is 200 miles from here because i'm pulling numbers out of the air" but in the sense of "google maps and the washington state department of transportation say the distance is 141 miles. afaik they used reasonable measurement techniques but i wouldn't be surprised if the answer is 140 or 142 miles instead."

also do we agree that evolution is, in fact, a theory? if so, then i don't see why it's any harder/purer/... than any other major scientific theory, so i don't see how you can disagree with that part of my post.

Personally I don't care if someone believes the "big bang / evolution" stuff or the "invisible sky wizard" stuff, it's the vocal ones who accept most scientific theories but also insist the bible / koran / whatever are 100% factual documents, ie they have no idea what their true opinions are but still insist on ramming them down other people's throats uninvited, that annoy me. This is why it was the first sentence of the quoted status update that tilted me.

i apologize for the derail. let me try to succinctly clarify my position and then i will stop:

if you believe that the theory of evolution as we have it today is infallible and 100% correct, you are not practicing good science. i strongly agree that evolution is the best explanation we have today for various facts about biology on earth, but that doesn't mean it will always be the best explanation or even that it is necessarily an accurate description of how life changes over time. the history of science is filled with theories which were once widely considered to be infallible and 100% correct but which were later shown to be incorrect. REPOST IF YOU ARE NOT A COMMUNIST.

I've hidden over 10 people's updates from my feed in the past 24 hours for indicating that they watch and are interested in Big Brother. Unfortunately it's now Friday so most of the remaining stuff is along the lines of "OMG ITS FRIDAY LETS GET DRUNKKKK!!!!1!"

I have this great scientific theory on breastfeeding that certainly should be law. It's not only scientific, but it's with God's approval as well!

There will of course be changes to evolutionary theory as we learn more about it but it is unlikely that evolution as a whole, general theory will ever be disproven. Don't bother comparing it to the "humours" or "ether" because that is ridiculous.
