My question is about the legality of the camera inspection. I could understand searching the car or the bags, as they can be concealing physical contraband, such as drugs or explosives. But why would they look at his pictures? Is everyone crossing the border automatically a candidate for possession of child porn?

I doubt it. I've been surprised from seeing all the stories about this in the news that the guys who just have pics of child porn get longer sentences and bigger bail amounts than guys who actually molest children.

Thanks everyone, but I was more concerned about the rights of the customs people to be inspecting items that can't possibly cause any physical harm than I was in pedophile bashing. When you take a laptop through the checkpoint at an airport they don't turn it on and look through all the files, do they? So why are they turning on someone's camera and browsing potentially private pictures? How does that serve national security?

Sometimes they turn electronic devices on in order to verify that they are working units and not a disguised bomb or whatever. Not sure why they would go looking at pictures. Maybe when they turned it on a pedo pic was the first pic that popped up on the screen?

At the risk of oversimplifying a complicated topic: As a citizen of the US you do personally have an absolute right to re-enter the country, butt naked with none of your stuff.

Whether customs allows ANY of your stuff in with you is entirely up to them. The 4th amendment and other such rights don't apply to stuff you are trying to import into the country -- and that's the legal status, more or less, of your possessions when you cross the border to get back in (oversimplifying a complex topic, but the gist of it is: they can do whatever they want pretty much).

iirc that part of the "terms and conditions" of using air travel/etc is that they can do things including inspecting the contents of your computer/phone/etc. that doesn't stop at physical inspection. they can, iirc, duplicate your hd and work on decrypting it later, amongst other things. i don't remember if they are allowed to force you to decrypt/enter passwords/etc.

Wtf does national security have to do with it? They check peoples stuff for evidence of a crime.

Possession of child porn and abusing a child abroad are both crimes in America.

So you think it's perfectly reasonable to allow customs to inspect the possessions of every person based on nothing more than the slim chance of a random person being a pedophile? How about giving every person a full body cavity search because they might be concealing drugs?
