At the risk of oversimplifying a complicated topic: As a citizen of the US you do personally have an absolute right to re-enter the country, butt naked with none of your stuff.
Whether customs allows ANY of your stuff in with you is entirely up to them. The 4th amendment and other such rights don't apply to stuff you are trying to import into the country -- and that's the legal status, more or less, of your possessions when you cross the border to get back in (oversimplifying a complex topic, but the gist of it is: they can do whatever they want pretty much).
