Happy to discuss the topic, but no time to respond to trolls like you....sorry to disappoint you. You'll be talking to yourself for now on. LOL

IDK Howard, the last time an Aussie female called me "Mate" it was "Mate, you're full, come now, you'll be sleeping it off in the box, it's a fair go"

All I know is I slept for about 10 hours and the same woman kicked me out of "her cell".

LOL. You know to call a lawyer when suspected of committing an offence, and you understand some Aussie lingo...I'm impressed mate!

And to the troll above, mate is a lot like buddy, not always said as a term of endearment....though I mean it in a nice way when I say it to DblBarrel.

And now, I'm off to play some poker.

I will say they know how to treat a drunk down there.

No charges, maybe some fines. I had no fines. I basically slept it off in some police cell in Ballarat and got kicked loose, no money, no ticket, nothing.

I don't think the problem is that these people talked to the police, it's that they are guilty. So if you are guilty the best course is probably not to talk.

this is incredibly frustrating to read over and over. i wish i had a magic wand that could knock sense into the millions of people thinking this way. we have 2.6 million people in prison; more than the top 39 european countries combined, more than 1.5x chinas prison pop (theyre over 4x as populous. this translates to 111 per 100,000 for them, 737 per 100,000 for us), more than russia and everywhere else.

i guess were just a really base and criminal culture? no, you idiot, its because we have a system in which the people who derive their income based on the number of people in prison pay lobbyists in order to ensure laws are structured in order to get max convictions. they do this, in part, by preying on exactly the ignorance you so proudly put on display here.

If this thread proves anything it would be that lawyers are more than happy to waste their entire Easter Sunday arguing with one another. :-)

Nahhh. I haven't really argued with anyone. Just put some facts out there. If people want to argue those facts, they can do it til they're blue in the face....I know they are facts for a fact....all some have done is basically try to tell me that cows are people, when I know for a fact they're not. No real argument to be had there.

I just don't get it. If the people didn't break the law (no matter how dumb the law is) then they wouldn't be in jail. I will admit that we have dumb laws. But I would say the great majority of people in jail belong in jail because they broke one of our laws.

well of course a majority broke one of our laws; this says almost nothing, were in riot and overthrow the govt mode as a country if the inverse is true. even if 90% of the prison population legitimately deserve (loosely using deserve obv given the mind numbing amount of nonviolent drug offenders imprisoned), theres 260,000 in prison who dont deserve to be there. this would put our "innocent people in jail" number at #5 worldwide prison population.

I'm not sure what you guys don't get. There's a lot of flat-out innocent people behind bars for stuff they didn't do, and there's many more that are innocent of the crime they were charged of but, "Heh, who cares? He's guilty of something - look at his rap sheet. If we're wrong it's no loss to society, vote guilty."

Charmer,

Your alarmist statistics show a lack of understanding of how legal systems work. It makes no sense to discuss China but comparing the United States to the rest of the West does make sense. A good place to start would be to actually compare crime rates vs prison populations. Here you'll find crime rates and here prison populations.

If you take the look at the data what you'll see is that even though European countries have much smaller prison populations their crime rates are considerably higher than the United States. The reason the United States has a higher prison population is because in the States people who commit crimes actually get reasonably long sentences and responsible punishments that they actually have to serve. In Europe and Canada you don't really get punished for committing crimes.

Two punks saw that a women was selling a piece of semi-valuable jewellery on Craigslist. They arranged to meet here with the intent to rob her. In the process of the robbery the victim was injured such that she will have lifetime diminished mental capabilities and for a while it was thought she would remain a vegetative state for life. The robbers got 4 months and 6 months of which they served less than half. So yes with sentencing like this it is very easy to keep Canada's prison population at a fraction of the United States but is this really a good thing?

I will find and post the graph. I played my usual game. The only way it affected my game was by cutting my sessions short/taking time off. Refusing to play tilted (even passive tilt), is a huge edge in poker.

well we let off casey anthony, so plenty of bad people here are running free too [/worthless anecdote]

i dont like the tangent this thread is veering off on. but i do know that recidivism rates are much lower worldwide than the US, and that crime rate =! victimization rate, and that the US has similar victimization rates to other industrialized nations. so maybe what happened in Canada isnt a good thing, but what happens in the US every day is certainly a bad thing
