I wasnt proclaiming it was. Just was asking the top percentile why they feel they drink.

Who said anything about the correlation between alcohol and being successful? Just because someone drinks doesn't mean they're doomed. I just personally think the cons outweigh the pros.

That is why I asked if you assumed those people would be better off not drinking than drinking -- saying nothing good comes from it implies they can only be hurting themselves.

Maybe you're thinking from a health perspective, but in terms of social networking, there's almost no chance not drinking is better than drinking.

Of course they would be better off not drinking, on average.

If there were two people I had to bet on not knowing anything about them other than one person had 0 drinks per week and the other person had 20-30, there aren't many, if any metrics I'd bet on the drinker. Use any metric, success, health, happiness etc.

I'm not taking any moral high ground here, I do drink. People can drink responsibly and live fine lives, but yes, people on average are better off not drinking than drinking.

I'm one of the 0 voters. Surprised to see the number isn't a lot lower.

In my opinion, drinking is a waste of money, time, flavour and sobriety.

I haven't had a sip since summer 2012. So I have drank alcohol before and decided it's not worth it.

I can't think of a single time when being drunk is advantageous to being sober. Oh it's 2am and my whole group of friends is hungry, but the best food joint is 10 miles away? Good thing I can just drive us all there! Oh, my buddy just got in a fight and needs to go to the hospital? Well good thing I can just drive him there. Oh, it's 2am and my sister needs a ride home from downtown? Good thing I can go get her.

imo drinking basically abhors all responsibility at the time you are drunk. When you are drinking you are saying "**** you world, I'm going to have no responsibilities for the next few hours and there's nothing you can do about it." Drinking is an extremely childish act, ironically.

I also can't think of a single alcoholic beverage which tastes better than Coca-Cola classic so there's no point in drinking anything else recreationally.

I guess I could in theory buy arguments like "oh I just love the way this 40 year old whiskey tastes, so refined" or perhaps "my social anxiety is so crippling that I have to drink in order to have a good time." I certainly don't disrespect people who drink "responsibly." I'd just rather be the sober man of the group and I feel like I can actually have more fun while sober than I will drunk (not to mention the +EV fun opportunities I have by spending that money on other things instead of alcohol in times when I'm not going out to bars with friends.)

Yeah sure coca-cola with rum is ten times better than normal coca-cola classic.

2 days of going out * 10 = 20
3 days of dinner with friends or having a beer at home * 2 = 6

26

About three times a year I'll be at a wedding or a music festival or some such, those weeks are definitely 75+. I feel events like that are unavoidable for most people though.

No blood relative that I know of is an alcoholic in my family. Nor does my family have a history of alcoholism. Granted, my job is to sell Wine, Beer, and Spirits, so drinking is basically a job requirement.

On the other things taste better anyway note. There are a handful of IPAs that I would choose in any scenario where I'm not drinking water if I could get them without the alcohol.

WG,

It sounds like you live in a world where the only way to drink is to get sloppy drunk and cabs or Uber don't exist.

Every member of my family drinks, including my extended family of 30 or so people.. I find it strange that drinking is equated to alcoholism by many of you.

My friends and family all drink, but I haven't had a drink in many years. I don't really think about it in myself or others, I guess that's how it should be. I tell people that I drank up my share quite a few years ago, so I'm not allowed any more, lol.

I put 15-20,. but am probably in 21-30. 21-30's probably my most common week, with ~50% coming on one weekend afternoon/night(usually rugby Saturdays or a weekend night going out) Weekend would be 15-20, mostly the big day and I'd go out about 1-2x a weeknight and have 3-4 on average. I do have the occasional lame cramming for an actuary exam period where I'm in the 0-10 range and not going out too much or too hard. I think those weeks are more common than 30+ weeks for me

Nope, ppl who brag about how they enjoy 1-2 craft beers. Love stressing the fact at how in control of their minimal consumption they are.

On the subject of drinking, does anyone else blackout a lot? If I have more then about 5 pints of beer I will almost always forget large chunks of the night. Never really thought of it as a problem until recently.

How old are you?

I was a heavy drinker like this from my teens up until my mid thirties. Never had hangovers that lasted more than a couple hours until I hit my thirties. The hangovers/withdrawals got brutal lasting 2-3 days whenever I stopped. Felt like I was dying, so quit.

Not drinking is better for social networking if you are an alcoholic. Other than that it doesn't matter either way.
