Best exchange in thread:

El Diablo,

I quit drinking soda years ago. I've never been in a situation where I've been dehydrated and drank soda, nor have I ever seen someone else in that situation. Common sense doesn't apply because so many things are counter-intuitive in science. It's very plausible that the bad things in soda would override the benefits in this situation.

---

kurosh,

Have you ever been thirsty and drank soda?

Okay, I was wrong, that wasn't the best exchange because:

Blah blah blah blah kurosh is so stupid. Yeah, well, how about we put money on this? Diablo? Anyone else?

Drinking soda on this desert island would kill me quicker than drinking/eating nothing.

---

kurosh,

Do we have to go do this in a desert or can we have a panel of scientists and nutritionists judge?

How much money do you have?

Edit: By the way, is that the same kurosh in that thread as this one?

The thing with this argument (and the same argument with beer) is that these people were also eating food. We actually get a lot of water directly from our food. So, without that you'd be MUCH worse off.

I'm still not convinced...

Let's say you weren't concerned with hunger and only hydration. Flux, what ratio of wine:food would give you the most hydration, do you think?

If your nutrition was met then just drinking beer enough to not dehydrate to death and never water wouldnt insta kill you. Sure it shaves a good chunk of life off you, but its not like you will get alcohol poisoning within a year or whatever.
Grunching a bit:

The 'beer' that people drank in the past as an alternative to water which was often dangerous and contaminated was very different to modern beer in that it had a pretty low alcohol content. It was more like a weak Ale and it was the brewing process which made it safer to drink I think, not the alcohol content. (This is according to a book I won at the Great British Beer Festival 2 years ago and then gave to my girlfriend's dad, so I can't really check the source)

Also, Beer will not dehydrate you because it's FULL OF ****ING WATER!

That kurosh vs. eld thread was so hilarious. My really belated contribution to that soda discussion:

I'm a fairly big soda drinker. I used to broadcast baseball games in hot and cramped booths in Florida pretty much every night. Some of the places we went there was zero air-conditioning and it was just sitting there dripping with sweat all night long with no breeze.

I drank the soda because I liked the caffeine to keep me into the broadcast. I never drank water. It wasn't so horrible in the booth most of the time and certainly wasn't comparable to a desert but it was certainly pretty hot. And for an afternoon game it could be pretty brutal. Probably 100+ degrees in the booth on those days. And as I said, it was pretty much impossible to have any condition other than just dripping away with sweat even just sitting there.

Usually drank 2 or 3 sodas and I was fine every night. Oh yeah...if it was a doubleheader which we had a lot of in Florida then it could drag on for 6 hours up there. Then I would either go home and go to bed (and perhaps not have any water) or go out drinking alcohol with friends and still not drink any water and I would be fine.

I think according to kurosh from that classic thread I should be dead or something (or at least really feeling it)

The average human being would start feeling, very, very bad after 3-4 days. With water in the mix, maybe a little over a week, but it would still be painful.

can you please stay on topic, or i have to infarct you.

ok so to be more specific: its going to be a beer from the supermarket, so no microbrewing. on how many weeks would you set the line for your average 1.80m 75kg male ?

It might be possible to go a few weeks, but you'd start doing damage much earlier than that. I think the dude is going to want to give up after around 1-1.5 weeks.

Oh jesus I just read the thread. Seriously, no one so far knows why beer doesn't dehydrate you per say, but the main reason you're hungover is because you're dehydrated?

Beer is mostly water. In this way it hydrates you.

One of the effects of alcohol is that it inhibits ADH, or Anti-Diuretic Hormone (Diuresis btw is peeing). ADH is the hormone that controls water retention. Your kidneys main function is to eliminate wastes, but to concentrate them in urine by removing as much water as possible (from the urine, and back into your body) along the way because, well, water is good for you and is important for living. Your kidneys have such an important job that they can actually influence your blood pressure and heart rate to get the proper filtration, which is why ADH, also called vasopressin, can control your blood pressure as well.

Anyway. Alcohol inhibits ADH (through the renin pathway), which limits your body's ability to control water reuptake in the kidneys. The result is you lose a lot more water than you would normally. This is where the dehydration comes from. The fact that you are drinking alcohol that has a high water content exaggerates this effect and causes you to have to pee all the ****ing time. (This is also where 'breaking the seal' comes into play: the stretch receptors in your bladder are not as sensitive to your bladder filling initially, but once you evacuate your bladder and 'break the seal' as it begins to fill up again the receptors start firing sooner and more often.)

I would guess that the higher the water content and the lower the alcohol content the longer you could survive without dehydrating. Sugar content is also very important because sugar, as a solute, requires some water to evacuate from your body as a waste product, which makes you lose even more water. This is why wine hangovers are way worse than beer hangovers.

So your best bet would be low cal & low alcohol beers. And if you could supplement with water you'd be in even better shape. But you'd still only last a handful of weeks before malnutrition set in.

Haven't read the thread, but I tried this. I went on a diet of beer and fried chicken. I had to add in water after only a few days I started getting terrible headaches and dark pee. The beer was definitely dehydrating me and I had to start drinking water. Maybe this bet would work if your diet was rich in fluids ? Like you were eating a lot of fruits etc..

zomg - He wasn't going to put himself into a coma. I was confused by this too but ElD explains this later in the thread.

Kurosh was trying to arrange for the bet to involve asking a professional instead of actually doing it and he was trying to specifically say if HE would die by drinking soda.

ElD saw through it in the way that kurosh kept saying, "okay, we go to a doctor and ask if *I* will be put into a coma by drinking soda." ElD noticed the *I* part as well as how he changed the death part to coma I think.

Best El D quote is from the Daliman BAC thread:

Quote:
In all seriousness, DO YOU HAVE NO F'ING COMMON SENSE AT ALL? I MEAN, JUST THINK ABOUT HOW MANY SHOTS IT TAKES TO GET REALLY, REALLY, REALLY DRUNK. NOW THINK ABOUT HOW MUCH ALCOHOL WAS IN THOSE SHOTS AND HOW MUCH BLOOD YOU HAVE IN YOUR BODY. THEN ASK SOMEONE WHO IS NOT STUPID HOW PERCENTS WORK.
