The key question isn't whether beer has a net dehydrating effect. It's whether the quantity of beer needed to keep you hydrated would kill you from alcohol poisoning.

I saw a show where some expert was on about it where it was dealing with the classic myth of not drinking whiskey when in a desert because it dehydrates you - they said whiskey at like 40% is fine.

Whilst alcohol does dehydrate you, the liquid you take in compensates that massively with stuff like beer and wine and its not even close.

Also i read somewhere that Guinness has most of the nutritional requirements for basic life and with certain vitamin pills you can survive on it to a certain level of health.

Beer of any kind and 3 weeks is so ridic easy. Its not a challenge so much as a game of lets starve ourselves for 3 weeks for money.

Also for the other point of alcohol poisoning - people up to relatively recently, certainly in the UK, only drunk beer and not water (because there was no clean water). Sure they had some bread and gruel now and again too, but alcohol doesnt stay in your system and your not drinking to get pissed so you arent going out and downing a dozen pints in a couple hours.

If your nutrition was met then just drinking beer enough to not dehydrate to death and never water wouldnt insta kill you. Sure it shaves a good chunk of life off you, but its not like you will get alcohol poisoning within a year or whatever.

I doubt it would be "easy", I linked in this thread a clip from the show Manswers which answers this very question. Their final verdict was 6-8 weeks max for someone to survive on nothing but water & beer.
You being 120lbs would likely put you closer to the 6 week mark btw.

Someone out there could definitely survive two months on just beer. Assuming we allow beer to be a fairly low percent alcohol with a lot more nutrition than your average lager.

You're not dehydrated because you drank. You're dehydrated because you're not drinking. So go drink. Beer would work fine for this purpose. Water is usually recommended.

i am pretty sure you could survive on 12% wine for hydration given that numerous societies (romans) had people who drank wine almost exclusively as water was mostly contaminated.

I did this when I was about 21-22 and ended up in the hospital after about 3-4 days. Severe dehydration. Had incredibly painful abdominal cramps. They gave me a couple IV's and I felt better right away. They advised me to expand my diet to include a variety of liquids and solid food. Advice that has served me well to this day.

How does it not dehydrate you? Nights I drink I have way more liquid than if I wasn't drinking and I get a hangover (which as far as I know is caused by dehydration). If I drink water before sleeping the night before I generally do not get a hangover.

Right. That's what I was saying and then you corrected me. And based on your argument I determined that even having a fair idea the person was probably going to die tomorrow still qualified as somehow technically 'surviving indefinitely'.

Right. I have to think some microbrew out there contains more actual nutrition than your average Bud Light or something. Like a pumpkin ale or something? I don't know. If we could get someone to create some sort of Vitamin Ale or something then perhaps even longer!

i wonder if you could distill just a ton of vegetables and get something that could sustain you for a long time, like alcoholic V8.
