Car Debate: Used v. New Car Debate: Used v. New

Hey Guys & Ladies,

I'm a 23 year old looking to spend $500 a month (with insurance) on a certified/new car.

I'd like to stand on the shoulders of elder (lol) OOTers to see what they've done, learned from, etc.

Seems to me that buying a certified used car is a better idea than new due to immediate depreciation when leaving the lot.

Thanks,

My fiancee and I got a great deal on a 2008 hyundai santa fe limited. You can probably get the basic models for around 15.

1 to 3 years old imo, thats what I did in 2005, for a 2003 car w/ 25k mi, got it for 8 or 9 below kelly blue book off ebay, havent had any troubles with it. Dont get too hung up on certified if you can get a good deal, just make sure you have a car fax, low miles, and a mechanic check it out. DO NOT get an aftermarket warranty, but a lot of cars (like mine) will have 20 to 30k miles/2 to 3 years left on the factory warranty (fwiw had 3 years 30k left when I bought mine)

For 500 a month you should be able to afford a lot more than 15k. How's your credit?

he said w/ insurance

FWIW OP, I had mediocre credit, parents co-signed @ 4.6% for a used car (which is decent for a used car) and financed 19k for 372/mo.

Since you arent 25, I would also reccomend buying a 500$ clunker and getting it plated and claiming this as your daily driver, your insurance will drop 500$ at least, and for two years.

never had a credit card, always paid verizon FIOS and att, but it's probably terrible since no credit is bad credit.

my parents will sign though for me

People who buy new cars are filthy rich and/or life fish imo.
