How far can you walk/run in 24 hours?
OK, the Ironman prop bet got me thinking about this. How far do you think is the maximum you could walk/run in 24 hours? Assume ideal conditions, no worries about weather/safety/etc. Also assume as much water/food/whatever you need, and bathroom facilities when you need them. So no "external" considerations. And assume there is a significant reward for each incremental mile covered, enough to really motivate you to push as hard as you can.
You are just walking or running as far as you can travel in 24 hours. You can go as slow or as fast as you want, take as many breaks as you want, divide it up however you want.
How far can you go? What is your strategy?

Zero elevation change, right? (No hills/etc, just straight, flat road)

I would put the O/U at 60.
Edit: That might even be too low.

Re: How far can you walk/run in 24 hours?
50ish sounds about right. A friend and I were recently discussing doing a 24-hour walk and agreed that's about what we could cover, factoring in breaks for meals and restrooms. My main concern would probably be chafing.
Note: I've never run farther than 2 miles in my life

Re: How far can you walk/run in 24 hours?
In the shape I'm currently in, I can't imagine I'd be up for much more than 5-6 hours- but that's a giant guess. Assuming like 15 miles per hour, which probably drops with each hour- that's putting me in the 50-70 range.
That said- I haven't really tested myself on something like this in a really long time and wouldn't be shocked to find myself to be very wrong in either direction.

The world record is around 180 miles so I imagine your average, untrained adult would cover less than 100 miles. Most likely in the upper ends of the 51-75 mile range.

Re: How far can you walk/run in 24 hours?
I am working towards running a 10K in March, but I would not do any "running" for the purposes of this experiment. I can't do it for long enough and am too spent when I am done.
Wiki says that the average human walking speed is 3.1 mph. I think, with enough incentive, I can go faster than that for five hours at a time. So my plan is 5 MPH for five hours, rest an hour, and repeat. This is how I reach my answer of 80 miles, which is certainly much further than I could actually go.

Dids - neither you nor anyone here is averaging 15mph for 5-6 hours. World record for a marathon is like 2 hours, or about 13mph.

I can't believe you don't think Dids is the greatest elite runner to ever live.

Re: How far can you walk/run in 24 hours?
I think sustaining > 3MPH over 24 hours of walking is going to be very hard.
Max i'm guessing anyone in a bet like this can do is going to probably be around 4x20 with 4 hours off so 80.
Personally i'm not going > 20 but i really doubt anyone other than some super competitive long distance walkers are going >50 and i'd take money against almost anyone trying for more than 70.

your pace will be 4 min/mile for 5-6 hours? impressive
I have no idea for me, I go to the gym 4-5 times a week, but no cardio there, only cardio is tennis, and volleyball in the summer.
50ish maybe?
