anybody here a telecommuter? I just took a job where I'll be working from 'home' roughly 70% of working days. the other 30% of the time I'll be in my companies office a few hours away.

obv I'm sure there are plenty of (ex) poker pro's around but I'm curious to see who has made the transition from cubicle dweller office life > telecommute life. what have you done to make this a sane transition? how often do you actually work from home vs coffeeshop/library/park bench/strip club? what do you do, what is your routine, blah blah. Particularly I'm interested in those folks who don't have a dedicated home office/spare bedroom to use, as I currently don't so I may go kind of crazy if I just sit in my 1 bedroom apt. all day.

I'll have my laptop + LTE phone tethered, so I can work wherever pretty easily, provided I can get to a power outlet every so often.

I've full time telecommuted for the last 3 years. I can only think of twice i was working in any sort of public place. A couple of times i have worked for a few days at a vacation home.

I have a home office. Company Laptop in the middle of the desk and monitor for my home PC off to the left. I can play 2 tables pretty much the whole time i work.

I am at the desk 8 to 12, make lunch, back to the desk til 4:30 and then done for the day.

It doesn't make me stir crazy at all, but i'm weird that way.

I work in corporate IT. The other people in my group are in texas, wisconsin, st. Louis, and california. So going to the office serves no purpose for me. I probably spend 2to 3 hours a day on conference calls.

About a year ago I moved about eight hours away from my old office but continued working there. So I went from working as a Software Developer full time in an office to working full time as a Software Developer 100% remotely.

I check in with my team every morning for 15-60 minutes using some form of video conferencing. Everyone I work with also has a video camera (most just use macs) so whenever we need to talk we just hop on a video conference. We also have a chat room that people are in all day long - which is nice for those quick drop bye conversations that you'd have with someone in person.

I work from home the vast majority of the time. I'll sometimes switch it up, but I'm usually too lazy and something like a Starbucks is a pain if I need to use the video/audio.

I don't really get lonely or miss the human element, but I think that transition was a lot easier for me since I was working with people I already knew really well. If you're working 30% of the time in the offices you'll probably be ok too since you'll get to know people.

When I moved I got a 2 bedroom apartment with the intention of using one of them as office. That lasted the first couple of months and then I moved into my living room. It was nice to be able to have the tv on for music or for random times when I didn't have very much work that required concentration.

yeah, I think I will need to keep the TV on during the day, just on CNBC for background noise or something

I'm a business consultant so unless a client wants to see mah purty face I'm working from home.

We have a pool so if it's not too hot I try to work outside on the patio. I do have a desk but it's a mess and I only work there sometimes.

Sometimes I feel like I'm going crazy, but then I just go dip my feet in the pool or try to go do something. Run errands. Pandora helps if it feels too quiet in here. And I have pets so it's nice to be able to take breaks and play with them.

Does anyone know of any places hiring telecommuting workers? I am moving soon, and a friend of mine wants a telecommuting job. She has worked in customer service/retail/sales. most of the jobs I find online seem to be scams or just spam.

If you know of any places hiring,or know of anyone legitimate companies/sites that may be hiring please PM me.

I'm surprised more people don't have telecommuting jobs, beats going to an office.

I worked mostly from home for a 3 month period at my last job. I was on a project based in London working from NY, so my day started at 4:30/5 am, and I wasn't about to get up early enough to drag my ass into the office.

News channel on in the background is a must IMO, and it's important for your significant other to realize that you're working and can't handle random **** around the house just because your "home".

I had to start working from home about 4 years ago simply cause it was impossible for me to do at the office all that i needed to do. I manage IT projects for a large bank and have to deal with data centers all over the world. Working from home was the only way i can be at work during business hours in most of time zones...The only drawback that i see in this whole arraignment is that it gets very difficult to change jobs. Considering how incredibly comfortable i am working from my couch + saving about 3 hours a day on commute + eating healthy at home + plenty of time for gym + saving money on commute\lunch\whatever...to change jobs now i need about 30% raise and thats not easy to find.

THIS!

It's hard for me to imagine that I'll be able to work from home the rest of my career. But, it's even harder to imagine getting back into the daily grind of going in to an office.

It changes your entire work-life balance. Before Telecommuting, many people spend more waking hours commuting and at the office than at home. Now, suddenly, your home is the center of your world. Hard to imagine giving that up.
