Bought a house last March. Been a pretty good experience so far outside of sump pump stopped working during 4 inches of rain (float switch went bad).

Plan on doing a lot to the yard this upcoming spring and summer. Cutting down 3 or 4 dead/dying trees and just making it look nice.

Pretty experienced with appliances and repairs so if any questions, feel free to ask.

Behind the dryer is an exterior wall so directly outside. Probably something like this:

Purchased new home so brand new heating system. When the heat kicks on in finished basement there is a whistling sound that can be heard on first floor.

Any ideas why this is happening? (I think its more the fan then heating. You can just run the fan and I hear the noise)

when i turn on my upstairs faucets after not running them for a while the water is dark colored for a second or two before going back to normal

dunno if it's because the water was sitting in the pipes or something to do with the water heater but i don't notice it on other faucets

also had a couple pipes freeze but they seem to have thawed without problem, not sure if i'll do something or just remember to turn the heat up and leave them running slightly if the temp ever gets that low again

any recommendations for thermostats? is the nest worth it, or should I just get one of the $100 honeywell wifi ones?

Just bought a $25 honeywell programmable one a couple months ago. Was free after our electric company rebate and it does the job. Really wanted to spring for the nest because it looks amazing and all the reviews I've read confirm that but wasn't in the place to spend $200 on a thermostat.

I read some conflicting things about the wifi Honeywell with that you have to log in to Honeywell's servers to do anything which a few people brought up that when Honeywell is having issues you can't do anything wifi related.

so I need to put an overhang off the from of my shed now. Anybody know how far I could bring it off the shed without needing posts? im in the bay area in a pretty low wind area.

I'm getting 4 new Windows new front door and new sliding glass door. Had 4 people come out one thru lowes and three independent. I'm confused still why I can't just get a door from lowes and have it installed? A couple people have said my front door isn't standard but a couple said it was. Also is this the kind of thing you can haggle over. Two of the people showed me the exact same front door but one guy have me 27% off.

A standard front door is about 36" wide a 80" high and 1 3/4" thick. Lowes should have quite a few options in stock or be able to order it. Not sure why they said it isn't standard, is there glass in the door, is the door jamb wider than 5 1/4"? Measure the door to see what you have first.

Not much you can haggle over, you could save money by buying the door yourself and have it on site, that way the contractor won't charge to order it and pick it up. You can try and haggle over installation price but I wouldn't lower my price if I was doing the work. You can ask and see what they say.

Are you getting retro-fit windows and slider or nail on new construction is the front door a complete new door, jamb and door? Just curious.

I'm ignorant about pretty much everything you asked me. The front door is from provia and will cost ~2700 including install. A couple people around here seem to use them.

Windows are single hung white pretty generic. Ones I have on there now don't open and are probably like 40 years old
