Heard about this site on the news, healthywage.com, they have a couple of prop bets on losing weight.

You can put up $100 and get even money to lose 10% of your weight in 6 months and/or put up $300 to win $1k if you can go from a BMI above 30 to below 25 within a year.

Anyone have any experience with it? I assume the verification process is probably a pain, but if they actually pay then this should be free money for anyone serious about losing weight.

Ive become a lazy *** lately, but am confident in my ability to lose weight, so will accept free monies.

Also potential for someone to start a staking stable of fat broke degens...

if this is wrong forum plz move mods thx

"January Matchup: Registration is open! The contest starts on January 27, 2012. The contest ends (and verified weigh-outs must be completed by) April 20, 2012. Maximum weight loss per person in the contest = 16.7% (1.5% per week, compounded downward).
Teams forming now!"

looks like a $60 buy in

Have you figured out how the site makes money?

If you can't figure that out then don't bother getting involved with them.

from the FAQ on the site-

"How does HealthyWage make money?
HealthyWage makes money from advertising and corporate partnerships. Companies want to be able to advertise their products to people focused on improving their health, and an increasing number of employers are looking for ways to incentivize their employees to get healthy."

but come on, 90% of people who say they are going to lose weight don't, this site is probably cleaning up with new years resolutions.

Sites that claim to make all of their money from advertising when they have a small userbase are usually scams ime

In for a team ... I can drop 15-20% in 3 months.. But we gotta start the jan 9th one

From what I read on another forum.. verification is as easy as you video taping yourself weighing in at your own house.

Are there any options to get a shorter term than 6 months and/or bet more than $500/month?

All,

Just took a 5-minute look at this and it looks pretty legit to me.

1) Tons of press and has been around for years. https://www.healthywage.com/info/is-healthywage-a-scam/
2) The core model is a 3-month 5-person contest that costs $25 per person per month. So that's $375/team. They get up to hundreds of teams per contest. Each contest pays out $10k, $5k, and $3k prizes for $18k total. 48 teams to break even on a contest.
3) The other component of their business is offering odds on people losing at least 10% of their bodyweight over some period of months. You can sign up and see how much they offer you based on your weight loss goals. Based on what they offered me, I bet they make quite a bit of money on this.
4) Then, on top of that, they make money from ads, referrals, etc - huge amount of money in the ************ industry.

lol, the odds on this are terrible. I'm 6'4" 230 pounds and they want me to bet $3000 to win $333.33 on losing 23 pounds in 6 months. I expected at least 1 to 1.

Those are about the correct odds for that wager imo.

Those odds are excellent. 23 pounds in 6 months? That's literally free money. Can you collect after a month or do you need to keep it in escrow for the full 6?

I should've done this when I lost 75 lbs in 6 months at a similar fatness. I only won a couple hundred from my buddies from that

you went from around 230 to around 155 at 6'4 or similar? I fail to see how these odds are excellent. I am sure I can do it if I try, but thats a pretty modest return and you definitely have to try to lose weight to lose 10% of your body fat.

You have to lose 10% of your body fat at least so even a person who is 6'4 150 would have to go to 6'4 135 which seems absurd. Why doesn't it adjust for height and weight?

LOL CDL, those are pretty solid odds.

Will look into it and see if it's worth it.

6' 180-190.

edit: Too much of a hassle to get a verified weight.

For people with weight to spare, this is a pretty easy bet. Fat me crushed those numbers with no money on the line. Degenerate fat me would have salivated over this bet.

Cut me couldn't do it. Me now? Possible but pretty tough.

Putting a maximum limit on it means you'll have a whole lot of teams (maybe a few hundred or more) splitting $18K.
