i like. and so it isn't obvious, they could assign 4 random words for each question.

Cause a dead dude had a talking parrot that was saying the sequence and there was a bunch of tiles arranged in a fibonacci pattern on the wall right? I loved that show. Pretty sick that Reg. E Cathey and other fairly well known actors got their start on that show.

In the article linked above the guy talks about how they could do things like stare at the ceiling to mean A, scratch your nose to mean B etc then mix it up so like staring at the ceiling for all odd questions means B and something else means A

Anyway just wanted to say I thought this was an open and shut case after watching the doco but after reading that ridic long article (its really interesting suggest you read it!) i'm not so convinced

I guess it shows how anything can be twisted in your favour

It's a very interesting story that I suggest everyone look at. Great observations from the sound and security people. Regardless, what a classic case of greed - as was said, had he stopped at 125 lbs or a quarter mil they may not have had nor wanted to pursue a case. But he couldn't help himself. Sheesh, the whole thing where he kept blurting out wrong answers EVERY question was suspicious enough much less the coughing.

Cheating on game shows came up recently in this forum. It revolved around tipping off contestants and I guess there is a real threat of jail time if you so much as try to give a sign from the audience. That explains why it doesn't happen very often.

Wikipedia says that Google is based on a misspelling of Googol.

Square One taught me "googol" also.

clearly cheating. once i got to part 5 and 6 i really just started to get sooo frustrated at how absolutely moronic their scheme was played out. it's like you go through all the trouble and complication to devise the frequency monitors/beepers/etc. and then go from that to just blatant and complete obvious coughing RIGHT after he lists EVERY ANSWER. just the way he has absolutely no idea on every question so he lists every answer multiple times until the cough comes loud and clear 2x is just sooo obvious. the guy should have been confident in his answers, basically show no doubt while still reading off maybe 1 or 2 of the answers (very unlikely you will have to list all 4 answers before the cough). as vorp said, assigning random words in the conversation would have been a better idea, and sniffling > coughing. it's so much harder to fake cough and look/sound legit. when they showed his wife cough it made me cringe at how ridiculously fake she looked. doesn't cough once throughout the entire show then she coughs twice on two different occasions after he says the craig david answer. lol and then she prob. realized the camera was on her and did this weird fake sniff/cough thing that just looked ridiculous.

i guess once you get up to like 250k greed really would set in hard and you wouldn't be able to stop, but if he stopped at 500k i bet he would have gotten away with it. i really doubt this is the only time this has happened on this show, hell probably a lot of other gameshows too. next time i see this show on i'm gonna watch for a few mins just to try and notice someone coughing or something.

Here's another great one. This was on the show "Press Your Luck". The guy recognized that there was a pattern to the supposedly random prize light. It's a fascinating story.

The best part of his story was when he took out all his remaining winnings (he got scammed out of a big chunk) from the bank in $1 bills in order to try and win some $30,000 radio station promotion for matching serial numbers. When the bills didn't match, he'd deposit them back in the bank and withdraw new bills. Later it was all stolen by his common-law wife. The documentary was actually really good. Check GSN occasionally. I bet they'll air it again.

Kind of sad that he got scamed and then robbed. Guys got nothing, figures out how to beat the game, and ends up on the run with nothing.

Still watching, just wanted to say that.

Chilltown, thats sort of like after the hand when everyone goes "omg I knew he was bluffing.... ...I don't know why, I just knew!"
Yea, I have those Mike Caro videos on VHS. It's funny when he says in a real sad tone "I raaaise". Of course, that means he has a very strong hand lol.

OK I am obviously wrong about that. I'm not sure why any school would teach students what a googol is, when they fail to teach them things like what the capital of Spain is and things like that. That was definitely a hard question for British people.

I saw a different investigation into this a few years back. I think it was John Stossel on 20/20...but they highlighted a part during the question you mention above (for 500,000), where the cougher got desperate when it looked like he was going to go with Berlin, and not only coughed, but had the balls to say "NO" (which sounded muffled)...check Part 7 again at the 4:08 mark...you can hear a cough followed by a "no". Again, you wouldn't hear it unless you were really listening for it.

I think you are wrong yet again with this example. Learning capitals of major countries is pretty standard in American education. We learn a lot about world geography, we just suck at teaching world history and world current events.

"Hi. I'm an idiot. I made an idiotic statement that I was sure was true, but I can't edit and now it's out there. So I'll make some lame, backhanded comment about education standards and then retreat back to whatever hole I crawled out of."
