I don't know about that, at least in the US. Like others have said, I learned this in elementary school or something else when I was very young. In fact, I remember googolplex (a number to the power of googol) and using it in those arguments that always ended in "infinity to the power of infinity" or whatever.

Also, people may know it these days because the word was inspiration for the name Google.

I think I learned the term googel when I was 11 or so from the Carl Sagan Cosmos PBS series.

I might have known it before then though.
I'm also surprised this question was so deep in the show.
Usually there are Q's along the way there I simply have no idea.

I sincerly doubt that. I learned it in elementary school and I would expect most of my friends to know it, while I expect none of them to have heard of the cough-colluders.

No way. Obviously more people here are gonna know it because there's more math inclined people, but still. I'm 90% sure I knew what googol and googolplex were when I was in 2nd grade, though I thought it was spelled 'google' until like high school, lol. I would guess that something like 10-30% of university students would know the answer to that one.

I've never watched the UK version until this, but on the US version I rarely know any answers above 64k.

i learned googol as a kid from the show square one (it was one of those words where they asked people on the street and got dumb answers). i also remember learning the fibonacci sequence from an episode of mathnet, a segment on square one.

Million pound/dollar question is easier than some of the previous ones because it's in the shows interest for the person to win the million once he gets that far. Creates far more than 500k worth of interest in the show.
